Gertrude Thomas Chandler Georgetown, SC - Gertrude Thomas Chandler, 100, surrounded by her family, went to be with her Heavenly Father early morning June 6, 2022. She was the beloved wife and widow of Wilbur Roslyn (Rossie) Chandler. Born May 1, 1922, to the late Sally Gertrude Budd Thomas and Samuel Sidney Thomas, she is predeceased by sisters, Dorothy T. Carter and Edna T. Sawyer and brothers, Basil, Edward, Sidney, and David Thomas. She is a graduate of Andrews High School and attended Rice Business College. A faithful member of Duncan Memorial United Methodist Church for over 75 years, Gertrude served as a Board of Trustee Chairman, played the piano for the men's Sunday School class, was a youth group counselor and a member of the chancel choir. The church gardens which she designed and landscaped are included in Nell S. Graydon's book, South Carolina Gardens. A lover of nature and the outdoors, she is a Nationally Accredited Master Flower Show Judge and Landscape Critic, Master Gardener, Life Member of the National Council of State Garden Clubs, Inc., and a former Chaplain and Life Member of the Garden Club of South Carolina. She was chosen to represent the U.S. and won the coveted gold medal for her flower design in the 1996 Chelsea International Horticulture exhibit in London, England. Mrs. Chandler served on the National Council of Garden Clubs Board for over 25 years. In addition, she served on the Board of Trustees for The Kaminski House, The Georgetown Historic Foundation and as a Trustee for The Georgetown County Board of Education for seventeen years. She is survived by two daughters, Wilmer C. Richardson (Doug) Clemson, SC, and Linda C. Hansen (Ralph) Richmond Hill, GA; five grandchildren: David Richardson, Ted Richardson; Roslyn H. Woerhrman (Scott), Christine H. Lefevre (Jason) and John Hansen III.; great-grandsons, Ben, Alex, Jeff, Brian, and Michael Richardson, Chase Lefevre and great-granddaughter, Madeline Gertrude Woehrman. She was a special aunt to many nieces and nephews. Officiated by Rev. E. Rossiter Chellis, services will be held Wednesday, June 8, at 11:00 a.m. at Duncan Memorial United Methodist Church followed immediately by burial in Elmwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends in the church parlor one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Duncan Memorial United Methodist Church, 901 Highmarket Street, Georgetown, SC 29440 or a charity of one's choice.
