Gertrude C. Combs

COMBS Mrs. Gertrude C. Combs, age 92, went to be with her Lord and Savior Friday, June 27, 2014. Gert loved poetry - reading and memorizing poetry from her childhood. She was very athletic, enjoying her outdoor walks and swimming. Her children will remember the joy in her voice as she sang "Happy Birthday" every year to family on their birthdays. She was born March 30, 1922 in Zeeland, MI to Henry and Jennie (Vos) Schilstra. Also preceding Gert are her granddaughter, Heather Nicole Combs, grandson-in-law, Doug Bahrey, and siblings Wybe, Jim, and Nellie. She will be greatly missed by her husband of 72 years, Harvey; children Mary Lynne (Edward) Garapick of Vancouver, British Columbia, and Riley (Hermi) Combs of Grandville; grandchildren, Jessie Bahrey, Jane (Nick) Luzie, Ami (Bryan) Walker, Emily (R. Leo) Olson, and Amanda (Budo) Pilipovic; great-grandchildren, Michael (Devin), Jonathan, Jake, Summer, Holly (Matthew), Olivia, Mallory, Gresham, Cecelia, Sophia, Faruk, and Safija; niece, Carol (Herb) Fitzgerald and family; three step grandchildren; and five step great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, 11 AM at Kentwood Community Church, 1200 60th St. SE, with Pastor Kyle Ray officiating. Interment will be at Winchester Cemetery. Relatives and friends may meet her family Monday from 2-4 and 7-9 PM at the Cook Funeral Home, 2067 84th St., SW, Byron Center.
