Skip delivered to C & W Control on Hull Street. A Great Guy!
Stefon Shorts
December 21, 2013
I just Googled Gilbert "Skip" Dawson and was shocked by his premature death.
We met in Robin Hood Apts in Norfolk, Va in the mid-70's. Skip was 4 years older than me, so his was like a big brother. He was a good student and athlete and I idolized him. My father thought the world of him.
After he graduated from Booker T. Washington, he dissappeared for a while but re-surfaced at Virginia Commonwealth University. He would look out for me like a big brother would and keep me out of the trouble I would always to find myself in.
I loved Skip like a brother!
Godspeed to his wonderful wife, Felecia, children, his main man, Steve and family!
Long live the Boys of Robin Hood!

To the Dawson family:
I've just learned of the passing of Skip through a recent Google search.
I am a childhood friend of Skip from Robin Hood back in Norfolk. We all had a close bond together with other friends going to the Boys Club daily and hanging out: (swimming, playing board games, pool, etc..,) I moved away after High School and never had the opportunity to keep in touch. I wish I had because we were all so close as friends.
Everyone mentioned his smile and presence when he was around. He was so charismatic with a good heart and soul. I will miss my buddy and forever cherish our memories. RIP Skip!
Your friend..

I just found out as I've been out of the loop for a while. I know that you are in Peace in Heaven and are watching over your family. Your buddy, Ronnie

To Felicia, Aja and Max:
Our deepest sympathy and condolences on the loss of your loved one and my friend Skip. I imagine you heard a few of the stories about Skip's golf exploits with Twiggs and Chief. Before he changed UPS routes, he came by our office most days, and during football season we had many rousing discussions involving Virginia Tech and Miami football. Skip will be missed by those of us who knew him, but may you always be comforted by your special memories of him.

My condolences to the Dawson Family:
I recently learned of the passing of your love one and my fellow alumni (VCU), Skip. Skip had a charsimatic and energetic personality. He truly was the life of the party at social events while we were at VCU. Know that he rest peacefully in our Fathers loving care. Cherish the memories and on a bright, sunny day know that Skip is smiling down on all of us, especially is loving family.

That itself can help us reflect on Skip's life and his bright and positive disposition toward others. I will never forget our VCU days in the early 80s and our reunions! Skip, you will always remind me to live life to the fullest!
Family, May God Bless you all and may memories of Skip forever keep him near and dear to your hearts. I will never forget him or his love for pajamas!

Felicia, Aja and Max,
I want to express my deepest sympathy for your loss. I've known Skip for about 5 years and have many memorable experiences with him to reflect on and smile about. From beach get-aways, to putting up with his unending antics on the golf course. Skip always kept us laughing, and always expressed how proud he was of his family. He will be dearly missed, but I find peace in knowing he is with the Lord.

Like many others, I knew "Skip" from VCU and he was certainly someone you would not forget once you met him. Though no one is ever ready for death, knowing that you will pass to your heavenly home is reward enough. God will pass you and your family through this tribulation to see a brighter day. Hold on to the good memories and prepare to see him again. With my deepest sympathy.

I met you at the beer festival one year with Skip. He was our favorite UPS man at work (DEQ - Air Monitoring in Richmond). He was one of the friendliest persons I have ever met. It’s has been a few days since “Skip’s” passing and already there are eleven pages of tributes to his life, that in itself speaks for itself. I knew Skip from our VCU/UPS days of the mid 80’s. Although it has been many years since our paths have crossed, Skip is someone you don’t forget. I encourage someone close to the family to print these tributes of their father for the children so as they grow older they too will cherish the memories we all shared with this special guy. Skip always managed to find a lighter side to life’s trials and tribulations. We all could only wish we had the energy, enthusiasm and zest Skip had. Skip, without doubt, lit a room up when he entered; there can never be enough Skip Dawsons in this world.

Dawson Family,
Skip was always the life of the party in my VCU/MCV days! Always a smile, never a frown. He'll be missed. Wishing you strength and comfort.
When Tomorrow Starts Without Me
When tomorrow starts without me
And I’m not here to see
If the sun should rise
And find your eyes
Are filled with tears for me
I wish you wouldn’t cry
The way you did today
While thinking of the many things
We didn’t get to say
I know how much you love me
As much as I love you
And each time that you think of me
I know you’ll miss me too
But when tomorrow starts without me
Please try to understand
That an angel came down and called my name
And took me by the hand
And said my place was ready
In heaven far above
And that I’d have to leave behind
All those I dearly love
But as I turned to walk away
A tear fell from my eye
I had so much to live for
And yet so much to do
It seemed almost impossible
That I was leaving you
I thought of all the yesterdays
The good ones and the bad
I thought of all the love we shared
And all the fun we had
If I could re-live yesterday
I thought for just awhile
I’d say good-bye and kiss you
And maybe see you smile
But then I fully realized
That this could never be
For emptiness and memories
Would take the place of me
So when tomorrow starts without me
Don’t think we’re far apart
For every time you think of me
I’m right here in your heart

I only knew Skip for a short time through the people at Viking. I am sorry I missed out on such a cool guy! I had the pleasure of first officially meeting him in VA Beach a week prior to Beverly running the half marathon in 2004 which, he thought was great! I found out later he was a runner and loved it, so then it all made sense to me! The next time I met up with Skip was in the hospital with Beverly. We had gone to visit and take lemon bars over Christmas. Man he loved those bars! I remember when we walked in, there was just this great and comforting glow about the room. He made me feel very welcome, like I had known him for years! That was really cool and made me feel I wanted to know him better. I am sorry I didn't get that chance but, if it would be ok with the family I would like to run for Skip in the Ukrops 10k this year. I know now how much he loved to run and it would be an honor to run for him. Skip inspired Beverly to run and she has inspired me to begin running again. Skip, you will be with us in our runs and you will live on forever in all the people you touched. God Bless you and your family.

In remembrance of a very good friend:
Often when we morn the loss of someone that is special to us. We forget how that person lived their life, and instead focus on the loss that he or she has comes to represent. I will not do that! I will remember how Skip lived his life, and the many special ways in which he touched the lives of so many others. There are few people who so completely represent living one's life to the fullest. Skip was one of those people.
I once read an inspirational saying that went, "Live each day as though you were going to live forever, yet as though you know you must die tomorrow." More than anyone else, Skip exemplified that. He must have read it too.
May his spirit live on forever though his family, friends, and everyone who has been touched in some way by him!!!
Many thanks,

To the Dawson Family, I knew Skip through his work with UPS. He was our delivery man for several years and the bright spot in every day that he would come in. We chatted about many things and he made us laugh with his stories and jokes. He knew he could stop by Venetian Marble at Christmas and enjoy lots of goodies. We loved having him drop in. I pray that God will give you strength each and every day just when you need it most to get through these difficult days. May you hold his memories close to your heart each day as he would want you to continue living while knowing he's watching over you from heaven. Today, Felecia, Aja and Max we're here for you because we love you so much just for loving and taking such good care of him. Skip..an icon in his own way. Until we meet again... Dear Felicia and family, I was on Skip's UPS route about 17 years ago. What a guy! Smiles abounded when Skip passed through the doors. You should know he touched my life. I look at every UPS driver hoping it would be Skip. I will still do that. My sincere wishes, Mindy

To the Dawson Family
I can't say that I truly knew Skip on a very personal level. But anyone who was at VCU at the same time he was HAD to know who he was! He always impressed me as being a free spirit -- a man who lived and loved life on his own terms. Wouldn't we all wish to leave this earth knowing we had done just that! His passing will leave a void in more ways than most people will ever realize.
God bless you and keep you during this difficult time.

To the Dawson Family, I offer my deepest condolences during your hour of bereavement. I knew "Skip" from our VCU days. He will always be remembered for his sense of humor, fun-filled ways and always being the "Life of the Party". May God continue to bless each of you. And please know that he is no longer suffering. He now rests in peace.

Felecia, Aja,& Max,
Please know that our thoughts and prayers go out to you and your families during this time of mourning - Eventhough we only saw you occationally after moving out of the neighborhood, we always kept tabs on how things were going with everyone...
As someone who has knew Skip since college, I hope that in letting you know that many, many people were touched daily by his positive outlook, irreverant sense of humor, and his love! Eventhough he is gone from this earth, please know that his memory will never be forgotten by all of us who were ever blessed and fortunate enough to be in his 'audience'!
May God be with you,
Bob, Susan, Robbie & Chris

Someone just sent me this e-mail. They titled it an oath from God. They asked that I pass it along to a friend and I'm passing it to you.
When you are sad...I will dry your tears. When you are scared...I will comfort your fears. When you are worried...I will give you hope. When you are confused...I will help you cope. And when you are lost...and can't see the light, I shall be your beacon shining ever so bright. This is God's pledge to the end. Skip showed us how to have fun and enjoy life while we're blessed with it.
May God bless your family.
