Gladys Johnson Hildreth

I just found out that Dr. Hildreth passed away last year. She was so kind to me when I was a secretary at Texas Woman's University. Please accept my condolences. I know she is having fun arranging parties with old and new friends in Heaven.

Gladys was a dear friend and colleague of mine at the National Council on Family Relations for many years. She was always ready to help with projects and conference plans. I remember especially, her work with me on the special local arrangements auction we had at the 2006 conference in Minneapolis, MN. She always had such good ideas and was fun to work with. She was a blessing to me and our organization.

I am still missing Gladys, my friend and mentor. There will never be another like her.

Gladys Hildreth was an amazing friend, mentor, and human being. I was fortunate to be her graduate assistant at LSU while pursuing a Masters degree as a newly single mother. She helped me believe in myself when I was struggling, and we shared years of professional and personal growth - with a whole lot of fun in the process. Gladys carried herself with dignity and confidence, and she fostered that dignity and confidence with everyone she met. She loved life, and I will always be grateful to have shared those years with her. Rest in peace , my dear friend!

I loved Gladys and I am so sad to discover, just today, that she has passed away. She was a remarkable woman and a dear colleague. My prayers and deepest sympathy to her family.

I am so sorry to see that Gladys has passed to heaven which I am sure welcomed her. She was an active member of the National Council on Family Relations during my tenure as the Executive Director. I could always count on her to offer help and support on any issues that arose. I especially remember her dedication to the CFLE program when it was first launched. She was also a defender of this program at a time when the Board considered disbanding it. I also remember working with Gladys on the local arrangements committee in 2006. She has left a rich legacy in family relationships, and child development as well as nurturing new professionals, and many friends of NCFR. Rest in Peace, Gladys.

Aunt Gladys and Uncle Eddie were very important to me and my family ( Sister -Glenda, Brother- Eric, and my Parents - John and Ruth Blackmon-Williamson) throughout my life. They were role models and loving Aunt and Uncle to me and my family as a child. They inspired and pushed us toward excellence as We grew and pursued our education. Gladys was a great friend, colleague and human spirit! Our families shared much during her tenure at LSU and in the Baton Rouge community.

My grand daughter, Olivia Rose Cross, and I would stop and chat with Gladys while on our walks. She was the epitome of grace and love and I will always smile when I remember her.

There are few individuals who have impacted the lives and futures of so many as has Gladys Hildreth. Her guidance and honest advice guided the careers of many. For more than five decades she has been a mentor to my family, as was her life partner,Eddie. Our son and daughter only knew her as Aunt Gladys. Our prayers are with her, as I know she still guides us. Her legacy will never die.

In the words of Maya Angelou, Dr. Gladys Hildreth was "a phenomenal woman." She was an amazing role model as a devoted wife, mother, educator, sister and friend. I learned so much from her style and grace. She was generous in sharing her cooking and garden, too. I loved reading her autobiography and will forever treasure her many pearls of wisdom. Her legacy lives on in her children, her extended family and students. Prayers are with you all.

Dr. Gladys was an impressionable example of a mother, educator and friend. So many memories of being with her, Bert and her family. An inspiration to all. A life well-lived.
