I had not seen Gladys in more than 70 years, but we shared a unique experience at Max Meadows H.S. commencement exercises in the Spring of 1934. Miss Jenny Kent chose us to get up on the stage and carry out a mock debate on whether Woman Sufferage
was a good thing. We memorized the speeches she wrote and both of us were dressed in long coats and black ties.
Gladys, of course, argued the Affirmative and I had the Negative.
Everybody SAID we did a great job. I know that it was a great experience so far as I was concerned. Since then, I've never had the slightest fear of speaking to an audience. My family moved to Wytheville in 1936 and my wife and three children and I moved to Durham in 1962. All of them join me in expressing sympathy to all of you!
