Passed away from natural causes on Friday, December 30, 2016, peacefully at the age of 98. He was born the second son of Charles P. and Gladys Harman Rudd in Salt Lake City, Utah, on May 18, 1918. He married Marva Sperry on June 5, 1941 in the Salt Lake Temple. He attended South High School and the University of Utah.
He is survived by children Lee (LeeAnn), Matthew (Nancy), Barbara (Clark) Jolley, Rebecca (Robert) Lingard, Susan (Michael) Taylor, Charles (Annette), Glenda (Steve) Western, and David (Aimee), brothers Calvin (LaVon) and Jack, 41 grandchildren, 96 great grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren. Preceded in death by his wife Marva, parents, brother Sam, four grandchildren (Annie Rudd, triplets: Spencer Dean Taylor, Samuel Glen Taylor, and Sarah Jane Taylor) and two great grandchildren (Katie Andersen and Elizabeth Ann Lingard)
From 1938-40 he served a mission in New Zealand under President Matthew Cowley. Glen was the last surviving Matthew Cowley missionary. He returned to New Zealand and the Pacific Islands 28 times during his long life of missionary, temple, and welfare service. His heart never left the people of the Pacific.
He operated his own poultry business for twelve years, managed welfare square for 25 years, and served at Welfare Services headquarters until his retirement in 1984. During those years, he also served a decade as Bishop of the Salt Lake Fourth Ward, member of the Church's General Welfare Committee, President of the Florida Mission (1966-69), President of the New Zealand Wellington Mission (1978), President of the Corpus Christi Texas Mission (1991), counselor in the Salt Lake Wilford Stake Presidency, and regional representative. He presided over the New Zealand Temple from 1984-87. He also received the Silver Beaver Award.
From 1987-92 he served as a General Authority Seventy. During that time, his assignments included President of the Pacific and North America Southwest Areas, and as counselor in the North America West Area Presidency. He also served as Assistant Executive Director of the Missionary and Temple departments. After his release from the seventy, the First Presidency assigned him to write a history of the church welfare program. The church published the history entitled Pure Religion in 1995.
He continued full-time service in Church Welfare until his death. Through the course of his service, he traveled as companion to 76 different general authorities and participated in more than 900 stake conferences. 60 of those conference trips were with 7 apostles who would later serve as President of the Church. At the time of his death, he was the oldest surviving general authority of the Church.
A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, January 4, 2017, at 12:00 pm at the Kenwood 2nd Ward LDS Chapel, 1765 E. 3080 S., SLC, Utah. Viewings will be held Tuesday, January 3rd, 6-8 pm at Larkin Mortuary, 260 E. South Temple, SLC, Utah, and Wednesday at the church prior to the service from 10:00-11:30 am. Interment at the Salt Lake City Cemetery.
The Rudd Family, his associates in the church, and friends throughout the world will miss Glen's boundless energy, sense of humor, tireless service, and unceasing devotion to the poor and needy.

My deepest aroha to the family. I cherish the times that my husband Phil and I spent with both Glen and Marva at the New Zealand Temple. Glen said that Phils Mum Te Oraiti Aspinall was his Boss but he was her Temple President. Treasured memories of a choice and chosen son of our HEavenly Father.May the Lords blessings be with you all. The Frost family loved Elder Rudd. He was generous in his praise and open with his heart and material blessings wherever he saw a need. One of our sons wrote that Elder Rudd "was a very good and kind man. He definitely made the world better, and always made me want to be a better person, even when I was just a teen." When he was past 90, he called me at work one day from his office in the Church office building. He asked about each of the 8 children and remembered the late President Frost with love. God bless you all until you meet with this dear man and your lovely mother again. They attended our daughter Jennifer's 1997 wedding reception. I will try to attach some pictures. Elder Rudd later sealed two of our sons to their companions in the Salt Lake Temple.

Dear Rudd Family,
We express our sincere condolences to you with the passing of your dear father, grandfather and great-grandfather. We express to you our love and rejoice with you in the life that Glen led. We are so grateful to have known him for the last 40 years and especially to have been his home teacher for the last almost 20 years. When we left on our mission to Vermont a year ago Dave asked Glen if he would wait for him to return home and he said he would wait for Charlie but not for Dave. We loved Glen and Marva for many reasons but most importantly for their example of love of family. He has blessed our lives more than you will ever know. We will rejoice and celebrate in his life with you.
Much Love,
Elder David and Sister Karen Fuhriman

express my sympathy to you and your families about your loss of President Rudd. He had a significant impact in my life as a missionary and continued to have one as we visited at reunions and listened to him speak. He was so positive in his approach. I always felt I could do better after hearing him. I was lifted up and inspired. I especially remember a mission conference in Jacksonville with President Rudd and then Elder Harold B. Lee. Elder Lee told about forming the Jacksonville stake with Elder Charles Callis in 1947

I loved to hear President Rudd talk about being a missionary under Elder Matthew Cowley. I loved his stories about welfare square. I remember Charlie being ordained a deacon in a small chapel near Tallahassee, Florida. I spent a little over a month in the mission home and enjoyed being with and eating with the family. That was a choice blessing in my life. I do not know the depth of pain he suffered with headaches but he just kept going and doing all he was supposed to as the President. I used his book, Pure Religion, as a bishop to help guide me.

I remember a time where we had borrowed some tennis rackets to play. He saw us bring them and said meet me in 10 minutes and we will go play. We played doubles and I thought my partner and I would win but he and his partner beat us soundly.

May you have a peace and joy of being members of his family. I am sure it has been a great reunion with your mother and his wife Marva as well as with his family in the Spirit world and all of the people he served with over the years.

Just before my grandmother died in 1961, she wrote to Bishop Rudd and declared that he was the best bishop in the church. I have not experienced anything in my 74 years that would lead me to conclude that she was wrong. He was a wonderful man and served not only the people of the 4th ward, but he also had a great impact on people the world over. Please accept our condolences.

We are saddened to hear of President Rudd's passing. But what a glorious reunion with his Marva...He suffered so long with his headaches. He often told us that the only way they could tell why he had them was by a autopsy and Marva wouldn't let them do it. His sense of humor was so real....We loved him dearly as our Mission President in Florida. We will miss him and our Florida Mission reunions. God bless his family.

I was ten years old when my father died on Christmas Day in 1950. Because my mother worked in Salt Lake and found it difficult to commute by bus from the family home in Sandy, she moved with my younger brother and me to a basement apartment at 852 South West Temple about a year later. We lived in the 4th Ward and Glen L. Rudd was our bishop. Because my mother was currently working long, tiring hours in a laundry, he soon arranged for her to begin working in the meat department with Charles Fagg at Welfare Square. What a blessing for our family! Through one of her associates there, she agreed to meet one of his neighbors, who eventually became my stepfather. We lived in this ward until I was a senior in high school. Bishop Rudd, and later, Bishop Arthur Sperry, offered the love and support we needed at such a crucial time in our family's lives. We were given opportunities to serve in the Church and made many lasting friendships. I was sustained as Sunday School secretary when I was just fourteen years old and have continuously served in various capacities in the Church since then. I will always be grateful for men like Glen L. Rudd, who influenced many, many individuals like our family for good throughout the world.

What a life! What a wonderful man and dear friend. I worked in the Welfare Department of the Church for seven years in his shadow, HE WAS Mr. Welfare. I will forever remember his sense of humor, good cheer, kindness, work ethic, and amazing memory. It was my privilege to introduce him to young people going on internships all over the world to teach church related workshops, and I always had a lump in my throat because I cherished this man so much. Rest in peace dear Elder Rudd.

I remember Elder Rudd dropping by the Deseret Bakery just before Christmas a few years ago, He asked me how it was going and I told him of all the thousands of loaves of bread we were producing and how tired we were with long hours and trying to get it all done. He looked at me and clasped my hand and said with a smile, "Glad to see the Welfare System working!!!" With that I had to burst out laughing at his positive attitude and we shared a few laughs!. What an great example!
