Glen Schuman

Sheboygan - Glen Walter Schuman, 83, of Sheboygan, went home peacefully to his Savior Jesus on Wednesday, December 13, 2017, at the Sharon S. Richardson Community Hospice in Sheboygan Falls with his loving family at his side.

Glen was born to Walter and Irene (Moeller) Schuman at Sheboygan Memorial Hospital on October 4, 1934. He was baptized and confirmed at Bethany Lutheran Church in Kohler. He attended the Kohler School System from kindergarten on, graduating in 1953.

From his youth, Glen had a natural affinity and love for construction, which resulted in building his own Soap Box Derby cars. In the 1950's after racing in the Sheboygan Falls, Madison and Green Bay Derby's, he won the Green Bay Soap Box Derby and went on to the National Derby in Akron, Ohio.

He enrolled in the University of Wisconsin School of Engineering and received his degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1958. While at the University, he enrolled in the ROTC and upon graduation was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the Corps of Engineers, serving his active duty at Ft. Belvoir, VA and Ft. Leonard Wood, MO followed by 9 year of active reserves at the Sheboygan Army Reserves Center, attaining the rank of Captain.

On November 29, 1958, Glen married his high school sweetheart, Julie Gehrke at Bethany Lutheran Church in Kohler and were blessed with a long and happy marriage and three fine sons. They were both lifelong residents of Kohler, where Glen served the Village as a Trustee. Glen and Julie moved in 2015 to the Villages of Mapledale Condos for health reasons.

Upon university graduation, Glen worked two years in the Vollrath Company engineering department before leaving to work for his father in Schuman Construction Company, taking over the business in 1972. In 1979, he left the business to become vice president of Quasius Construction, retiring in 1998. He enjoyed using his construction abilities to "give back". He was the Sheboygan Habitat for Humanity Construction Manager for their first new home and was the construction expediter for the Sheboygan County Veterans Memorial. At Bethany Church he supervised building the new garage, the south annex addition with the lift, as well as making banner stands, wooden Lenten crosses for the church lawn, quilt racks, and communion card holders for all the pews. He enjoyed making mantle and grandfather clocks and other furniture for his family.

Glen served Bethany Church as past president, as well as with elder, trustee and weekday school teacher.

For almost 20 years, Glen and Julie spent February, in Santa Rosa Beach, FL, where they were "snowbird" members of Hope Lutheran Church LCMS and where he volunteered at "Caring and Sharing" a habitat affiliate for 10 years. Back home, Glen spent many years volunteering at the Sheboygan Falls Food Pantry, serving as past president.

Glen was a founder of the volunteer group to maintain "The Old Plank Trail", and was instrumental in obtaining the mowing equipment for this purpose and spent many hours mowing the trail.

Having a first meeting that Glen organized at his home in Kohler, he was the founding member of the small committee that organized the Kohler Christmas Walk that ran for approximately 40 years in Kohler.

Glen also had a private pilots license and was a proud 17 gallon Red Cross blood donor, until illness prevented him further.

Julie and the family were truly blessed to have Glen as the head of their home, a man humbly thankful for the undeserved forgiveness and salvation Jesus won for him on the cross and it gave Glen such great joy to give away literally hundreds and hundreds of the crosses to people who crossed his path on the road of life.

Glen is survived by Julie, his loving wife of 59 years; three loving sons and families, Mark (Amy) Schuman of Minneapolis, MN, John (Miriam) Schuman and their children, Julia and Christian of Northbrook, IL and Paul Schuman of Glendale,WI; he is also survived by his sister, Carol Moe of Onalaska; sister-in-law, Gretchen Hemenway of Lake Mills, WI; and brother-in-law, Bob Parnitzke of Sheboygan; as well as loving nieces and nephews.

Glen was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Irene (Moeller) Schuman; daughter-in-law, Mary Ann (Jacquart) Schuman; sister-in-law, Karen Parnitzke and two brothers-in-law, Karl Moe and Chuck Hemenway.

A funeral service to celebrate Glen's life will be held on Monday, December 18, 2017, at 1pm at Bethany Lutheran Church in Kohler, with Rev. Robert Steele officiating. Burial will be at Woodland Cemetery in Kohler.

Relatives and friends may greet the family on Monday, December 18, 2017, at Bethany Lutheran Church from 10am until the time of service at 1pm.

A memorial fund is being established in Glen's name.

Richardson Hospice Home Care and onsight for Christian compassion and to everyone who has prayed for and supported Glen since 2000, through all his seriousness illnesses.
