Dear Davis Family,
Our family was so saddened to hear the loss of Jeep. He was such a wonderful guy and great friend to our father, Tom Stefansky. Our father always told us what a great athlete Jeep was and great stories that we'll always cherish. We send our deepest condolesences at this very tough time. God bless you and your family. To Dee and the Davis family
I was so saddened to hear of Coach's passing. He was my track and football coach and I was lucky enough to be able to work at Jeep and Joes when it first opened.
Although there are countless fond memories of Jeep my favorite is the time Ed West, myself and one of the other players TeePeed his house while he watched us from inside the house till we were done and THEN decided to bust us. He then invited us in for hot chocolate of course AFTER we cleaned up the yard.
Jeep was MORE than just a teacher and a coach, he was the biggest inspiration in my life and I'm sure many others . . . you will be sorely missed COACH !!

I was saddened to hear of Mr. Jeep Davis' passing. Mr. Davis represented so much of what Barberton has been known for: Commitment to Excellence, Hard Work, Character, Integrity, and a Perseverance that is unending. Mr. Davis will always be remembered for these traits and more. Farewell Mr. Davis. Thank you for your inspiration in class (1974-1977) and for your legacy. Sincerely, David M. Branham

Jepp Davis was a sweet and wonderful person. He taught me to drive many years ago. I remember that when I was hesitant to merge onto the highway, he reached over and stepped on my foot so I could gain acceleration! That is one of my favorite memories ever. Thanks for the memory. May God bless your family with peace and rest. KNow you have been thought of and are loved.

Our Heartfelt Sympathy at the loss of Your Beloved Husband, Father, and Grandfather. "Jeep" was truly an inspiration to all. Every time I would see him he had a smile on his face and a twinkle in his eye. I remember my family sitting with him and his family at Milich's for a football banquet and how it was such a great honor to do so. God Bless All of You.

Deepest condolences to the family. Jeep was my Driver's Ed teacher. There were four of us girls and Jeep for the summer program in 1970 and we had a blast. He took us to show off his Jeep-n-Joe's pizza shop that was still being remodeled in Kenmore. Of course we were dedicated to the one in Barberton. I will always remember him with fondness. Such a great guy.

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

February 2, 2009

To The Family of Glenn "Jeep" Davis:

Over 30 years ago, there was one man in this community who taught me two very important things in my life. Glenn "Jeep" Davis taught me how to drive and how to run. It was truly a pleasure knowing Jeep and having the privilege of being one of his students in driver's education and one of his athletes on the Track Team. My brother (Victor) and several cousins (Terry Cameron, Ann Cameron, and Jeffery Byrd) were all on the track team, and we were all so proud to be a Barberton Magic.

After not seeing Jeep for so many years, I had the pleasure of running into him when we were getting our cars serviced here in Barberton. When I saw him, I could not help but to give him a big hug and to tell him how much it still meant to me that he was my coach in high school. I had a chance to share with him that throughout my college years, Jeep was a better coach than all of my other coaches put together. He reminded me of how awful I was when I first started running track, but after the training that I received from him, I got better. I was able to make it to the State Championships in 1978, and five years later, I became an All American in Track at Mount Union College for the 'Purple Raiders' in Alliance, Ohio. I was also given an opportunity to become a student assistant coach. During our track practices at Mount Union, I used all the workouts that Jeep taught me, and the members of our track team thought I was crazy giving them those hard workouts. I always told them that if they do the workouts, they will get better, because they will be properly trained.

It's so amazing, that you never know when you'll see someone for the last time. When I saw Jeep in November 2007, he looked really good. As he was leaving the shop, I had said to him that he still walked like an athlete, even at 73 years old. What an honor it was to have met Jeep, to have been taught by him, and to have been an athlete on his track team. I will never forget the Gatorade and ham sandwiches that Jeep would bring for us when we went to the away invitational track meets.

Jeep was more than just a great athlete, he was a great person who inspired me to want to attend college and run track while in college. He told me that I would peak in college, and he was "on point" with his prediction, as I was able to make it to two national track meets and won numerous divisional titles and came close to winning a national title. For this reason, I then made it into the Barberton Sports Hall of Fame and the Mount Union Hall of Fame, but it was all because of being coached by this great Olympic athlete, Glenn "Jeep" Davis.

I would like to say good bye to this terrific person and great athlete, who could have worked any where in the country, in the world for that matter, but he chose to work with us here in Barberton. I am so thankful that in the 1970s, I was able to meet this man, benefit from his knowledge, and to apply what he taught me on the track to my day-to-day job. He taught me how to have a strong work ethic and to appreciate all that life had to offer me. Jeep, you will be truly missed.

On behalf of the Byrd Family, I would like to send our condolences to Jeep's family. Please know that you have our deepest sympathies on your loss.

Sincerely,

Jeep was a person of warmth, integrity, and humility--attributes so rare in today's world! I will treasure my memories of him. He was so comfortable in his skin and put others at ease immediately.
I remember a poem that came to mind and seems to apply especially to Jeep:

The race appointed I have run;
The combat's o'er the prize is won;
And now my witness is on high;
And now my record's in the sky.

I leave the world without a tear;
Save for my family loved so dear;
To heal their sorrow, Lord decend;
And to the friendless prove a friend.

We will miss your presence Jeep but you will live on in memories.

At Barberton Stadium, on a hot, humid September night, in 1952, Glenn "Jeep" Davis made his debut as one of the Akron areas greatest athletes, by scoring three touchdowns against Akron East high school. I was on that East team and remember the surprise we had as "Jeep" took us apart with his running. I was able to get my hands on him, a couple of times, but, missed him often as his awesome athletic career was being born.

I have an unpublished Akron Beacon Journal photo of him pulling up in our end zone with his first score. I often brag about having played against this great athlete, even though I never had the opportunity to meet him.

My prayers for peace and comfort go out to his family.

What a huge loss for all who knew Jeep, especially his family. My thoughts and prayers are with you all. I'll never forget coming over to your house on Robinson with my dad Ron. He wanted to check on Jeep after he had a accident in the wood shop at the old BHS. He had cut off the tip of his finger, but in typical Jeep fashion he couldn't of cared less. He instead was asking how I was doing and signed a few Jeep Davis Olympic cards for me. I still have them today. RIP Jeep, your spirit will rain in the Magic City forever.

JEEP was truly a wonderful person and a personal friend. I was honored to present him with a scroll from the BHS student body after his first Olympics. I will always cherish that picture as well as the poster that hangs in our family room signed by Jeep to a good friend. Jeep was someone I looked up to for years.
We were honored when he came to Manchester to dedicate our new track. I know that was a special favor for me but the students really appreciated it.
We will now have a void that can not be filled. One thing is for sure, GOD will have the best track team in heaven.
Best Wishes to the family, may your sorrow be replaced by many good memories.

To the Davis Family,

So sorry for the loss you face as a family and the loss the world shares with you of such a great and humble man.

My father (George E. Tomko) passed away in May, 2008 and had a book my sister gave him to write in about many categories - one of which was "Mentors" - there were spaces for three people. Daddy wrote "Jeep Davis" on one of those lines! As a "Barberton born" and local resident, Daddy had many experiences with Jeep and cherished them all.

The impact and life-changing experiences shared by so many will forever keep alive Jeep Davis in the hearts and minds of millions.

God bless you and yours during this difficult time and the days ahead. The world was so blessed with Jeep as a part of it - let's rejoice we had him for awhile and keep alive his smile forever.

I was very sorry to hear about the passing of "Jeep". I ran track with Glenn in 1950-51 in Marietta, Ohio
and graduated with "Dutch" Davis.

Jeep was a major influence on my life. He was one of my football coaches. He taught me how to take the driving and parking test in an Olds Vista Cruiser. He was my boss at "Jeep and Joes". I have been a teacher and a coach for the past thirty four years because of Jeep and several of the other coaches of the old Barberton High School. I only hope that I have helped half as many young athletes as Jeep did. I know that both my mother Evelyn and I have lost a friend. God Bless.

To the Davis family. "Jeep" was the first person I met while visiting OSU for freshman orientation in 1959. We were teammates on the track team while he was training for the 1960 Olympics. Of course none of us could keep up with him! Glenn came back and visited the team frequently. He always had kind words for everyone-what a class act he was. Not too long ago I sent one of his SI Olympic pictures to him for his autograph. That picture is on my office desk and wil be forever. Glenn was truly an inspiration to all of us who knew and loved him. I will always remember handing off the baton to him in a 4X100 meter relay at Ohio State. God bless "Jeep" and his family. To Jeep, My Coach, My Teacher & My Role Model,

Jeep was a Home town Hero! But he was also my High School Track Coach & my Drivers Ed teacher. He taught me how to throw the Shot Put & the Discus. I placed in the State Track meet my senior year and I will never forget being inside the Big Oval with Jeep, he was so calming! He taught me to face adversity and triumph!

My senior year when I was struggling with the discus & told him I wanted to quit, he looked me in the eye and said “…I’ll tell you when you can quit son….” He taught me to never, never quit!

Coach helped me to break the school record in the Shot Put, and he helped me to get a scholarship to play football at Lehigh University. I owe Coach a debt which can never be repaid! He taught me to be grateful!

My Dad and I helped to remodel and do interior carpentry work at “Jeep & Joes Pizza” it was a hot spot in the early 70’s. We donated our time but it was not even close to repaying our debt for the gifts Jeep gave to me and my family. He taught me to be generous!

Thanks Coach, you may be gone, but you will never be forgotten by those whose lives you touched! You will live on in my heart and the hearts of countless others. God Bless & God Speed!

Celebrating a life well lived. We will cherish the memories forever. I remember so many family picnics and graduations that our families shared over the years. I honestly cannot remember ever seeing Jeep without a smile and kind words to say. I remember when I was in elementary school that we had to do a report on a famous person, I picked Uncle Jeep because he was a famous olympic runner. I remember my dad bringing me over to talk to Uncle Jeep about the information that I would put in my report. Uncle Jeep was a part of a group of men that stand out in my memories as a special breed! He's gone home to be with the Lord, no more pain or suffering, just peace and happiness for evermore. I am sure my dad (Tom) and Uncle John and Uncle George along with so many other family and friends were waiting with open arms to welcome Uncle Jeep home.

To Aunt Dee Dee, Glenn Jr., Tim, and Jennifer, You are all in my thought and prayers !!!

Our family (the Grisola's) lived across the street from Delores on Bellview Avenue in Barberton, when I was growing up. I remember Jeep although I didn't have a lot of contact. I always admired him for his many accomplishments, and wherever I went (college, Army, etc.), I always mentioned that I came from the same town as one of finest athletes I ever saw. He made all of us proud. Thanks for the memories.

This will be a great loss for the family and people in Barberton and the Portage Lakes area in Akron. He was admired and loved by anyone that knew him. Always with a quick humorus reply and always a smile.

I had Jeep as my drivers ed. teacher at BHS back in the 70's! He was a great teacher and we were always amazed to see him pull out his Gold Medal from his desk drawer! Not under glass, not sealed in any way. He was very gracious in sharing his medals with us. I'm 51 now but still hold great memories of him. Not to mention....who didn't love a good Jeep-n-Joe's pizza??? Rest in Peace Jeep and my sincere condolences to your family.

My mom saw the article last night and was so sad. She said she had him for a driving instructor at BHS. She says that he was always kind and taught her well. She said he never freaked out if she did something wrong and she still to this day appreciates that. She had nothing but great things to say about him. I am so sorry for your loss and please know that he made such a differance to so many people.
