Sandy Tremblay DPT
December 26, 2023
I find it very difficult to believe that it has been five years since Dr. Mackin's passing. I currently have the pleasure of working in the Neurology offices where his picture looks down upon my workstation, so that he is literally looking over my work each time I am in the office. I smile back at him each morning I arrive, letting him know I will continue to do my best for my patients, as he always did. I believe he would be proud of our work with his clinic, where we do strive to meet his high quality of care, empathy and compassion for this patient population in each and every interaction. While we sorely miss his anecdotes and brilliance on a daily basis; I take comfort in knowing that he looks over us all, and we will meet again someday. My condolences to the family, and his patients who still miss him.

Glenn and I had dinner in October 2018. Shortly after he called and told me about the diagnosis. He was a rare human beingdear friend, caring physician and loving father and husband. He told me the prognosis was 3-6 months but I haven't had the courage to check until now. My heart to the hearts of his family and all who were fortunate to have had them in their lives. Miss you, man.

I am shocked and saddened to read about Glenn's death by reading his obituary in Neurology (which came to England with some delay). Glenn and I were fellows at the same time at Penn and shared an office for one year. I cannot think of a nicer, more considerate and friendly colleague. He was a fine man and doctor. As an aspiring MS specialist I admired and secretly envied Glenn who had already published a landmark paper in Nature on MS (and was to published another seminal one in Science soon thereafter) and appreciated his courage to move to a different field as a neuromuscular/EMG fellow. I caught up with him at the Penn reunions at AAN and it was always nice to speak to him and reminisce.
Glenn had a brilliant intelligence and was an excellent doctor, while unassuming and unusually modest given his achievements and quality.

Dear Lynn, I am devastated to hear about the loss of your dear husband, Glenn. I have no words but want you to know that you and your girls are in my thoughts and prayers. Ralph and I were so blessed to share in the joy of your wedding and knew then that you two were truly life partners. Please know that I am here (I'm now in Villanova!) and I would love to see you and give you a big hug. Sending you strength in the days ahead. Xo. Veronica [email protected]

Sad beyond belief. Dr. Mackin was a good man. He will be missed. I was diagnosed with ALS by Glenn almost 4 years ago. He drew these little sketches on paper to help explain his diagnoses, we laughed about it cause he was no artist by any stretch of the imagination but was an awesome Neurologist. I always envisioned my wife telling him I passed away, not him first. He has helped my wife and I so much at our clinics with him. We used to tell stories to one another and Glenn always made us laugh. Great man!!! I know in my heart he is with our Lord and feels pain no more forever. Rest in peace my friend.

Dr. Mackin was an awesome doctor, when most doctors gave up on trying to diagnose me at my young age he continued to find why my body was ailing at the young age of 45. I will miss his sense of humor and love for his patience.

I was beyond saddened to hear that Dr. Mackin had passed away. I had seen so many doctors over the past 12 years after being badly injured in an accident and Dr. Mackin was the first who really helped me. Had I not met him who knows where I would be. I want to thank his family for loaning him to me for a few hours. He was an angel for me on Earth. I'm so sorry for your loss. I can't even find the words to thank him for all that he has done for me.

Dr.Mackin was the best, most compassionate person and doctor my husband and I ever met. Truly the best doctor to have maintained his level of compassion his entire career. My husband suffers from M.gravis and Dr Mackin always was kind and compassionate and always made time in his schedule to see my husband if he was in a crisis. He made him feel that he wasnt alone in that disease. Bless Dr Mackin and his family. So very sorry for your loss.

Dr. Mackin was my neurologist for the past five years. He was one of the most down-to-earth physicians that I had the pleasure to know. I was a patient of Dr. Mackin for 18 years and am heartbroken to hear of his passing. He was a fine man and an outstanding physician. I owe my health, and the ability to live a largely normal life, to his care and compassion.
I will miss him greatly. Dr. Mackin touched the lives of so many people, often at our lowest points, in such a positive way. He won't be forgotten by any of us.

I was also one of his patients 3+ years and I was very lucky to have him as my doctor. After numerous Doctors, specialists etc.. couldn't figure out what was wrong with me,and why I was losing my ability to walk, well he knew the first time he saw me. He was able to get me on much needed treatment to stop the damage and slow the progression.I wouldn't be walking today without his diagnosis. He often spoke of his own family. And an unusual watch he wore that he really liked. And if you asked about it would tell you the story of where it came from. He made you feel at ease.. always asking how you were doing and meant it.The world has lost a light in this dark world. You will be sadly missed ..

We are sorry for your loss. We only met Dr Mackin a few years ago. He was the best doctor a person could ask for. When he walk in the room for your visit, it was like yesterday. He knew who you were. Remembering Glenn and his kindness to his mother and family. My deepest sympathy to Lynn, Sarah and Emily.
Glenn was not only a great colleague but a great friend. He was extremely thorough as a scientist of neurology and compassionate as the artist of neurology. He was he doctor's doctor. His sense of humor was bone dry and has had a lasting impact.
Glenn and I share the dislike for the renaming of our alma mater medical school from Thomas Jefferson University medical school to SKMC. Everytime I see Thomas Jefferson's image whether it be on a nickel, $2 bill, etc, I will think of Glenn.
He was a great example of courage and strength to the end. He is already sorely missed.

My heart goes out to the entire Mackin family. May you all be given the strength to weather this difficult time. Life can seem so unfair.
Glenn was the epitome of the ultimate physician. If you were lucky enough to be his patient, you received expert care. I know because I referred him many patients over the 20+ years that we were colleagues. I sought his advice about many more. I will miss his clinical expertise. Even more I will miss his dry wit and subtle sense of humor. I think I'll even miss his EMG reports.

Lynn, Sarah and Emily,
My deepest condolence to you and your family. He truly was an unique man. I will cherish and remember so many qualities about him. His constant dry witty humor. Always quoting literature and people that I had no idea what he was talking about! Speaking his thought process while going on many tangents, but always circling back around to complete his point. His gentle and compassionate soul. His brilliant but humble mind. His desire and calling in life to help people in need and his love for his family.
His passing is such a loss to the family, friends and patients left behind. He will be missed by so many. He left a legacy behind with his ALS Center.
Wishing you peace to bring comfort, courage to face the days ahead and loving memories forever hold in your heart.

While I have lost a beloved cousin who was more like my brother and will for ever miss him I will never loose the affect of that captivating smile that I first took serious notice of with the help of a collie dog named Trixy in 1955.
I first saw that trademark ear to ear smile of Glenn's in 1954 when he arrived home. But it wasn't until Easter dinner the following spring at Aunt Evelyn and Uncle Al's house, Glenn's parent, that I noticed that Glenn had really taken control of things with that smile.
When I arrived that day a 9 year old filled with Easter excitement for the upcoming dinner and desert and of course the hard boiled colored egg battle which involves tapping your chosen egg tip to tip with your challenger and not breaking your egg, a game that Glenn was later to master and win at every Easter dinner after the age of 7.
I was met at the door by Trixy Aunt Evelyn's brown and white male collie dog. Trixy and I played and then Trixy led me to Glenn who was lying in his bed/crib busily playing with brightly colored toys hanging from a string across the crib. When Trixy stuck his head over the top of the crib as if he was showing me something new, Glenn let out a squeal and that smile appeared from ear to ear and I like everyone else from then until now was under the smile spell.
Lets not ever forget that smile.

It was the greatest privilege and honor of my Nursing career to work with Dr. Glenn Mackin. Working as his nurse for 5 years, I was blessed to be able to care for his patients who he loved, to learn so much from him, and to be able to call him my dear friend. Dr. Glenn Mackin was an exceptional soul. He always saw the best in people, and he brought out the best in those he worked with, as we all wanted to do better and more for him. He had such a strong moral compass, and believed that ultimately good would conquer evil, and that the light would push away the darkness. He was easily the most brilliant Physician and human I have ever known. He was famous for his long-winded lectures, for quoting all kinds of literature, movie, and song lyrics, for taking notes by starting in the center of the page and working his way to the edges of the paper, using lines and arrows as guides, and for having the worst doctor handwriting of all time. He adored his family, wife Lynn, and daughters Sarah, and Emily, and cherished his family vacations. He was ok as long as they were happy. I would look forward to a tidbit of his whit in my in-box. I can't imagine this world without him. It will be a much less ideal place. I will miss you, GM.

My Dear Glenn!
I am claiming the right to call you by your given name after so many years together at the Clinic. After all, it is documented that I was patient Number One to sign up!
I had counted on YOU to be there for me when the time comes for me to enter Hospice Care, so that I would not suffer needlessly. It was your humanity and compassion which allowed you to make such an offer.
Indeed, was it your compassion that you never let your patients feel your sadness and grief when yet another of your patients succumbed to ALS? I, for one, always knew I had your full attention during my Clinic visits.
And the crew you assembled for the Clinic was imbued with same qualities inherent in you: kindness, humanity, compassion and, yes, expertise, in knowing how to anticipate the needs of your patients and their various expressions of ALS.
I hope very much that it will be your legacy that precisely these your qualities will continue to be expressed as the Clinic continues without your physical presence.
Although no longer with us, You will live in my thoughts and heart for as long as I live!
Your patient and friend

Glenn,
I will miss you as a wonderful colleague and a dear friend. It has been an honor to know you, Lynn and your family.
I will carry into my grave with memories of our two special encounters. When we met the first time at LVH, I was so nervous and took food items on display for lunch. It was so embarrassing but I won't forget your smile, the same smiling face as the one I am looking now with tears dripping. I will have the distinction of the only neurology colleague to have put a lumbar puncture needle into your back, with a shaky hand. Thanks for the trust, friendship, and respect.

Dearest Family of Glenn Mackin, Lynn, Emily & Sarah,
I am so very sorry to hear of your loss.
As one of Glenn's longtime patients, I feel as though I know his sweet family. He spoke fondly of each of you and with such beautiful pride. Pure joy would come to his face as we shared stories of our families over the years. He loved you all so very much, and I am quite sure the hardest test, (which he always aced!) was to say goodbye for now, to his loves.
The world has lost a wonderfully intelligent, compassionate physician and an awesome friend.
I find some solace, and I hope you do as well, in the fact that this amazing physician went home to meet the Great Physician, our precious Lord on Christmas Day. The day we celebrate the birth of our Savior is a great day to meet Him face to face.
I like to imagine all of the genius conversations that go on with great minds, such as Glenn's and those who have gone before him. I also ponder the beautiful glow of light and sounds of laughter as they sit with God our Father, as He says, Good job and welcomes His faithful servant.
I will miss our bantering and joke telling, the laughter in tough situations, the calmness of his approach and spirit when dealing with difficult issues. I will miss his excellent thought process, sharing the joys and successes of our families. I will miss his views on life, his sharing of his feelings on getting graded by EPIC, (LOL), I will miss the safety I felt knowing this man was there in my corner and the corner of many of his grateful patients. I will miss his compassion and personal touch; I will miss his selfless composure denying his physical and emotional hurts as he listened and helped those of us who trusted him with our lives, but, most of all I will miss Glenn.
I had a personal joke with him about getting out of ICU, asking if I could just go home. He once said, "Well if you had an apple pie you could use it as a get out of jail free card." I brought him a pie at a later date, and on a subsequent visit to the ICU during a winter when a big snowstorm was coming, he let me use it! I got to sneak out the back door and into the comfort of my home. I am thankful he was able to be surrounded by his loves at home, and Glenn I guess you finally got to use your apple pie!
My love and prayers for his family continue as they navigate the days ahead. Thank you, God, for sharing this extraordinary man with us for as long as you did, you Glenn are and will forever be in our hearts.
