Gordon Lewis Bellamy
Gordon Lewis Bellamy was born at Bow Island, AB. on November 1, 1912. Gordon was the second son of Sidney and Effie Bellamy. After a family vacation in Ontario, the family decided to settle in Saskatchewan and purchased property just south of Carievale, SK., where the Bellamy's set out raising nine children. Gordon attended school in Carievale, until he was sixteen when the sudden death of his father forced him to conclude his studies, and with his older brother Cecil tend the family farm and assist in the raising of his young brothers and sisters. Gordon stayed on the farm until 1943 when he left the farm, but not the farming, and married Violet Bellamy on January 5th 1943. Their son Thomas Gordon was born February 8th 1946. So raising their son they continued to live in Carievale, and run the Carievale telephone office and the local BA station, until 1948 when they decided to buy the family farm from mother Bellamy. Gordon and Violet and their young son Tom moved to the farm where in 1951 their daughter Cheryl Marie was born. The Bellamy's raised their children on the farm until such time as most often happens their children moved to further climes. Tom now resides in Regina, SK and Cheryl now lives in Phoenix, AZ. Gordon continued on the farm until 1979 when he decided to retire, and he and Violet built a new home in Carievale. Gordon worked so very hard his whole life farming, trucking livestock, and then finally as a hobby he became the consummate environmentalist and recycler, long before it was fashionable. Somehow he knew about global warming and over taxed land fills. Of course there was always a dollar to be made, so it made those road trips worthwhile. Due to his trucking business and then later his recycling business, Gordon became very well known in the south eastern corner of Saskatchewan and of course the south western corner of Manitoba. Gordon never met a stranger he didn't like. Gordon loved Robert Schuller every Sunday morning and believed the positive messages that Dr Schuler delivered weekly. Gordon and Vi were married for 67 years and during that time he was a successful farmer and business man. He found his inspiration in his wife and children and worked every day to make a better life for them. He said if there was one wish it would be pi9296less time working and more time with family and travellingpi9296. However he did find time for recreation and enjoyed curling, bowling, gardening, and golf. His favorite places were White Bear lake and Victoria, BC., and in his earlier years Hawaii. Gordon's favorite scripture was always the 23rd Psalm, his favorite music was Amazing Grace and Somewhere my Love/Lara's theme from Dr Zhivago. Gordon loved the garden and especially the roses he and Violet had cultured together. Every spring it gave him great pleasure to snip those roses and bring a big bouquet into Violet. Gordon loved his animals and of course the favorite and fodder for many stories of old was his horse Skip. Gordon raised greyhounds and grew to love all. Later years Gordon especially grew very fond of his daughter's West Highland Terrier China Blue and of course she of him. They were inseparable when she came to Carievale to visit. Gordon fell ill in 2004 and was admitted to Sunset Haven in September of that year where he resided until his death Thursday, September 23, 2010. Gordon passed peacefully in his sleep having just spent one of his best days visiting with his family and friends. He was predeceased by his parents Sidney & Effie (Byers) Bellamy; brothers Cecil, Frank and Howard; sister Ada Hudson, 3 brothers-in-law: Archie Reid, Ralph Simpson, and Sid Hudson; 4 sisters-in-law: Vera, Flo, Edith, and Jean.
