Gordon Goodwin Obituary
Goodwin was born December 30, 1954, in Wichita, Kansas. His earliest foray into big-band music came when, while in seventh grade, he penned his first chart, titled "Hang Loose." He later studied music at California State University, Northridge.
After college, Goodwin was employed as a musician at California's Disneyland. That experience launched a career that would bridge studio, film, television, and live performance, including later work with Disney that boasted a much higher profile.
In 1999, Goodwin founded the Big Phat Band, combining the swing-era spirit of classic big bands with contemporary jazz, funk, and cinematic orchestration. Under his leadership, the group earned both critical acclaim and commercial success. Their debut album "Swingin' for the Fences" became the first DVD-Audio release ever nominated for two Grammy Awards.
Over a career spanning decades, Goodwin earned four Grammy Awards and three Daytime Emmy Awards - alongside more than two dozen Grammy nominations. Two of his Emmy Awards came for his work as the musical director for the animated series "Animaniacs." He also wrote music for the scores of such Disney and Pixar films as "The Incredibles," "Ratatouille," and "The Lion King."
Goodwin leaves behind not only a discography full of bold, inventive jazz, but also a revitalization of big-band music for a new generation. His work proved that big-band jazz could be both reverent of tradition and daringly modern.
In an era when many declared big-band jazz a relic, Goodwin insisted otherwise. Through sheer talent and determination, he kept the brass blazing, the rhythms swinging, and the spirit alive.
Goodwin is survived by his wife, Vangie Gunn-Goodwin; mother, Alice; four children, Madison, Garett, Trevor, and Garrison; and stepchildren, Levi and Aria.

My long career was in classical music and I also love jazz.
It was my good fortune to hear the Big Phat Band twice, in person.
The first time was at a MENC conference here in Minneapolis and the 2nd time at Yoshi's in Oakland .
Gordon's death is a greatloss as his talent was huge and the Band great.

I am so sad to hear that Gordon has passed, Two hours of Phat Tracks helped me through many difficult Saturday evenings at a time of change in my life. My mother died of pancreatic cancer and I can only pray for peace and healing for his family and loved ones as time goes by. Thank you, gordon, for sharing yourself with the world

I worked as Gordon`s publicist for the Grammys two years ago. I had never met him before that, but in a short amount of time that I worked with him, I realized what a brilliant musician he was. He was also a very kind soul, he definitely left an impression on me. A bright light has passed, but not forgotten. I was very sad to learn of his passing, but I know his memory and legacy will live on forever.

I never had the opportunity to meet Gordon, but he was the reason that I started to listen to jazz music. In high school I discovered the Big Phat Band, it was so unlike any other jazz I´ve heard. It was fast, exciting, complicated, and sparked a love for the music that has continued ever since. Currently I am an aspiring music educator in the Pittsburgh area, and I play jazz trombone where ever I can, as well as lead my own community jazz band. Gordon was the genesis of this love for me, and I am so deeply saddened by his passing. My heart goes out to his family and friends. I never would have been where I am or who I am without Gordon.

An incredible musician, band leader and overall entertainer. His unique style of big band music made him and his band great to listen to.
