Gordon Harley Slater, 86, a lifetime Lapeer resident, died Wednesday, May 9, 2012. He was born April 3, 1926 in St. John, MI, son to Harley and Merle (Parr) Slater. Gordon graduated from Lapeer High School, class of 1944. Upon graduation, Gordon enlisted in the US Marines and served proudly during WWII. Gordon married Cathryn Ann Lubin on July 23, 1949 in Lapeer. He worked at the Lapeer State Home in the grounds maintenance department for over 35 years, retiring in 1983. After "retiring", Gordon worked five more years for the city of Lapeer grounds department. Gordon was a long time and active member of Trinity United Methodist. He was active with the Cub Scouts for over 50 years, recently being honored with the Scout's Silver Beaver Award. Gordon was a member of American Legion Post #16. Gordon is survived by his sons: Peter (Deborah) Slater of Troy, VA, James (Virginia) Slater of Lapeer and Kenneth Slater of Lapeer, eight grandchildren: Steven (Kristine) Slater, Jonathan (Rachel) McCracken, Christine (John) Parr, Kathryn Slater, Stephanie Slater, Cynthia Slater, Victoria Roush and Jillian Roush, two great grandchildren: Kevin & Bethany. Gordon is also survived by his brother, Richard Slater of Grayling. Mr. Slater was preceded in death by his wife Cathryn Slater; brother, Robert Slater; and his parents. Visitation will be held from 2-4/6-8PM Sunday May 13, 2012. Gordon's funeral service will be 11:00AM Monday May 14, 2012 at Trinity United Methodist Church, Lapeer, Rev. Ralph H. Pieper, II officiating. Burial in Mt. Hope Cemetery Lapeer, with military honors under the auspices of American Legion Post #16 Honor Guard. Memorial contributions may be made to the Trinity United Methodist Church.
