Grace Setsuko Murata

Grace Setsuko Murata, aged 91, passed away peacefully on November 25, 2024, in Kula, HI. Born on March 12, 1933, Grace dedicated her life to education, faith, and her family.

Grace graduated from Hamakuapoko High School and pursued higher education at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, which set the foundation for her lifelong commitment to teaching. She devoted much of her career to teaching at various elementary schools across Maui County, including Waihee, Lanai, Kahului, Kihei, and Kula. Beyond her professional teaching career, Grace also shared her love for music by teaching piano lessons to countless students from her home.

Grace was also the proud owner of Murata Leis, where her artistic talents flourished in lei making. Her hobbies included ikebana flower arranging, reading and participating in her book club, along with traveling, which broadened her perspectives and enriched her connection with others.

Grace was a beloved figure, known for her intelligence, wit and generosity. Her thoughtful and caring nature made her a cherished friend and mentor to many.

A devout member of the Iao Congregational Church, Grace's faith was a cornerstone of her existence. She actively participated in church activities and found great solace and community through her faith.

Grace's family was her pride and joy. She is survived by her loving husband, David Murata; daughters, Ruth Murata-Eisen (Steve) and Jody Singsank (Patrick); daughter-in-law, Mieko Murata; and her adoring grandchildren, Kristen Leavenworth, Mika and Landon Eisen, Lauralei Singsank, and Makoto and Maya Murata. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Jeanne Sera; son, Michael Murata; and brother, Stephen Harada, along with her parents, Lyman and Kathleen Harada.

Her life will be celebrated at Iao Church of Christ on December 21, 2024, at 4pm, preceded by a viewing at 3:00pm. In lieu of flowers or koden, the family requests that monetary donations be directed to Iao Church of Christ, continuing Grace's legacy of faith and community support.
