Graeme MACQUEEN Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 28, 2023.
Dr. Graeme MacQueen died at home in Dundas from cancer on April 25, in the loving presence of his wife and daughter, Sharon and Jessica. He leaves behind his brother Ken and sisters Meg and Lorna. After graduating with a Ph.D. from Harvard, he joined the Dept. of Religious Studies at McMaster, where he taught Asian religion to thousands of students, being honoured for excellence in teaching by the McMaster Student Union. He established the Centre for Peace Studies and was involved in peace-building activities in different war zones. After retirement, he dedicated his research to a critique of the foundations of the War on Terror. Graeme had friends all over the world, and was appreciated for his creativity, courage, and dedication to peace and justice. The family will hold a private memorial in celebration of his life. People say that the first year after someone dies is the hardest. My experience is that what is hardest doesn't have to do so much with time as with "button-pushers." Out of the blue there's something that comes in the mail, there's a meaningful song or there's a comment that seems unrelated--and suddenly memories and emotions push in with force. In this last year, Graeme's name has come up in my world at times and the intensity of my reaction has varied. Missed, for sure, but those buttons will continue to be pushed, and so Graeme will be remembered despite the passage of time.

Although I never met Graeme in person I felt like he was very much a kindred spirit. He was a tireless researcher and I read his book, "The 2001 Anthrax Deception--the case for a domestic conspiracy." This body alone was enough to convince me of our government's deception when it comes to major events in the early part of the 21st century. I shared a few emails with him on those subjects. Graeme Macqueen was so kind, forthcoming, and managed to show me what kind of person he was. His brilliance, and truth will be missed. I hope his family is able to get some peace just knowing how many lives he touched and how he carried more than his share of the truth movement. Rest in Peace Graeme Macqueen.

I got to know MacQueen's persona and writing thru his 911 investigation. I think of him with some Giants of my life time: Ali, RFK, MLK. A Buddhist, a Muslim, a Catholic, and a Baptist - spiritually motivated heroes know something! Thank you, Graeme, and family.

Our sincerest condolences to Sharon & Family.
From our first encounter with Graeme, we knew we were in the presence of a wonderful human being. He exuded such a strong sense of calm and love. Graeme made one feel immediately at ease. Our conversations were deep and meaningful, but always had a touch of humour.
Sadly, we didn´t get to know him as well as we would have liked; we knew he had so much to offer, both intellectually and spiritually. We felt as though we had known him forever.
Graeme carried himself with such grace and dignity throughout his illness. He helped awaken in us a desire to work towards a higher level of peace and courage. Our hope is to do him proud.
He will be greatly missed.

Our deepest condolences go out to Sharon and Jessica and the rest of the family for your loss. Graeme was a dear friend of many years and will be sorely missed. Along with others, we learned much from Graeme about how to work actively for peace and social justice in our community and the wider world. His legacy lives on.

My deep condolences to Graeme's family and friends. Graeme was a model of deep social responsibility and especially steadfast in his long promotion of peace in the world. He promoted democratic values, solidarity and social justice. Graeme had a very perceptive sense of humour. He was a reliable and good friend.

So nice to read these tributes. I am grateful for all the moments I was fortunate enough to spend in Graeme's presence. His kindness, caring, his asking about each member of my family and his love of his own family, his softly outspoken stance for peace and justice throughout his exceptional academic and activist career, his intelligence, his bravery and his humour I will treasure and hold in my heart as an exceptionally inspiring example of humanity at it's finest and it is my sincere hope to meet with him again on the other side.

Graeme had so many outstanding qualities it is hard to focus on just a few. He was brilliant, compassionate, patient, funny, warm, moral, humble, considerate, cooperative, helpful and loving. I had the pleasure of co-teaching a course with Graeme on Oil and War. It was wonderful (and instructive for me) to see how Graeme helped others think about complex and difficult issues. We also travelled together for one of the Peace Studies projects in Afghanistan, where both his deep knowledge and sensitivities to different cultures was on display. It was always one of the high points of my visits back to Canada to catch up with Graeme at the local pub and learn of the incredible work he was doing on one of the most significant fiascos of our era - 911. His vision and values remain an important beacon. I miss him.

I wish I have known Graeme earlier. We met in late 2021. He changed my life. He gave me hope, wisdom and friendship. He shone a light in my life despite his ongoing health issues. It is because of him my life became better, more enlightened. I found the strength to keep going. I wish I have known Graeme sooner. He will be in our memories and remembered fondly. My love and regards to Sharon and Jessica. His legacy lives on. Love - Candice Chow and Jan Klakurka xoxoxo

Graeme changed the course of my life. His deep commitment to peace and justice, his intelligence, his thoughtfulness in all he said and did drew me into Peace Studies. I was privileged to work with and learn from him over many years. Graeme was a courageous activist and gracefully bore the cost of that. He was a meticulous scholar, a patient exemplar to me.
He could also be very funny at lighter moments and darker. There was much laughter amidst the intensity of the work, and much pleasure in the fellowship it engendered. A memory that brought many later chuckles at its irony - Graeme with a small group of others, including Johan Galtung, floating in the sunshine on Johan's small swimming pool in Spain, sipping drinks, while discoursing on basic human needs!
While Peace, Justice, Truth and Democracy were outstanding themes in Graeme's life, he quietly aligned his life with respect for the ecological integrity of the earth, literally walking the talk. He did a lot of his thinking while walking.
I'm thinking daily of Sharon and Jessica and Graeme's love for both of you.
I derived so much from Graeme; I'll do my very best to pay it forward.

Dear Sharon and MacQueen family,
Graeme was a colleague, a mentor and a dear friend to me. We travelled together to Afghanistan a few times in mid and late 1990s as part of the McMaster University's Afghanistan peace initiative. I vividly remember Graeme giving a speech about global best practices in peaceful conflict resolution and national reconciliation to an audience of university students and community members in 1994, in the city of Hirat, Afghanistan. He made a major contribution to conception and implementation of the 'promotion of a culture of peace' and 'building peaceful societies' projects in Afghanistan. The peace storybooks for children, he helped develop, are still being used by a number of organizations in Afghanistan and beyond. I miss a period of weekly get together over a vegetarian pizza in 2019 and occasional rides from his home in Dundas to a clinic in Burlington in 2021 and part of 2022. We had plans to do a few additional things together. Rest in peace Graeme, I really miss you.

As a friend to Sharon, I want to say how grateful I was to get to know Graeme during the covid times. It meant the world to find thoughtful people who were not in such a panic of fear that they were pushing others out of their lives. John and I will also remember Graeme as a good friend and colleague to my departed father-in-law, peace activist Ray Cunnington. Graeme showed much grace, humour and dignity in hard times. Namaste, Graeme. Peace be to you, Sharon and Jess.

Dear Sharon, Jessica and the MacQueen family,

I'm so sorry for your loss. Graeme has touched so many with his warmth and kindness, he will be greatly missed.

Thousands of students have had the privilege of being taught by Graeme in over his 30 years at McMaster, he taught with humility and honour. His friendship will always be a treasured part of my life.

Wishing you peace and comfort.

Graeme was a man of many passions and one was his love for his daughter, Jessica. After the trip that the two of them made to India, Graeme told us many stories of their adventures and how close they felt to each other during those weeks. More recently Graeme would go to Jess' apartment almost every evening. I imagine them laughing together while watching old sit-coms. I'm guessing that the same things made them chuckle. Yet another connection between father and daughter.

In addition to all his other fine qualities, Graeme was a wonderful dad. He told us stories about the trip he and Jessica made to India which was a high point in his life. And sometime in the recent years, I believe that almost every night Graeme started going down to Jess' apartment and they would watch comedies and enjoy some good laughs together. A happy time for a dad and daughter who were very close.

I feel so fortunate to have become a relatively new friend of Graeme and Sharon MacQueen (and Graeme´s sister Meg) during the "COVID" years.

I first came to know Graeme through his careful work around 9/11. His careful analysis of first person accounts lead me to believe his work over the media.

But most, I enjoyed stories about his family whom he loved so deeply.

I am so very sad to lose this wonderful friend, but at the same time, glad Graeme has been able to leave his earthly body behind! His time had come.

Rest in peace dear Graeme.

My heart goes out to the MacQueen Family

I was so fortunate to have spoken again with Graeme that fateful morning of his final day on this earth. He had just sent me an email saying "Carol, It´s ok that I´m leaving this earth. I´m not afraid". I cried with Graeme that fateful morning and I am still crying now.....

Graeme MacQueen is a "Man of Conscience"...The depth, breath and scope of his compelling body of writing and research work is conscience driven. Graeme´s fierce belief system compelled him to shine a laser beam against any form of fraud and injustice. Graeme was a Beautiful Man of Peace, generous, compassionate to all his friends and colleagues, teaching us real life lessons of wisdom and empathy along the way...I will forever cherish my friendship and honor his work including his latest
