We met Rod 9 years ago on Sebago Lake where he was a friendly and helpful neighbor. He gave some of our guests rides on his jet ski which he loved to ride. We miss him very much and offer our sincerest condolences and best wishes to his family. Rest in peace Rod.

Rod was a professional in every sense of the word, and a personable kind man, as well. He had great common sense and was a wonderful role model and coach for my son, Joey.
He truly represented what being a teacher and coach means.

I have only fond memories of this great man! I attended MHS class of 1998, Mr. Pickard was VP at this time and I will never forget that he always caught me leaving campus for lunch as a freshman and sophomore. I can still see him like it was yesterday walking down the hill past the "butt line" with his little notepad writing our names for detention! He had such a big heart, and was always making his students strive for greatness, by building their confidence and letting them know he was on your side and would pick you up if you fell He had a big impact on my life for sure. My condolences to his family, I can only imagine what a great loss this is for everyone he loved.

One of my first memories of Rod is also my favorite. About a year before our wedding, Dave moved into my fully furnished condo in Tewksbury. Rod, who I had only met a few times before, helped Dave move in. Dave had a favorite chair, which was very worn and faded, but he wanted to include it with our living room furniture. After a long moving day, the three of us were standing in my living room when Rod suddenly said Dave, that chair looks like crap next to all her nice stuff. Then he looked at me and said let me get that out of here and donate it to someone who can use it. From that moment on, Rod became my close friend too!! He will always hold a special place in our hearts. So sorry to Susi and family for your tremendous loss.

Susi, Heather, Kyle, Kevin, and the rest of the family- I'm so sorry for your loss. To me personally, Rod was, in no particular order, a teacher, a coach, a colleague, a father figure, a pal, a sounding board, an employer, an employee, a role model, a job reference, a good example, a reacher of things up high without a ladder, and mostly a true and loyal friend. Not a day goes by that I don't say something, do something, or think something that I learned from him. He will be greatly missed, but we are all lucky to have known him- a once in a lifetime person.

I have a funny story about him as a vice principal in Marblehead & reading that he lived in Montreal as a teen, it makes sense.
When he was the VP at MHS, he would get stuck watching us on Thurs detentions for up to 3 hours after school. He would sometimes ask one person a trivia question & if gotten right, everyone could leave & get credit just for showing up.
He asked me: Who was the first NHLer to score 50 goals in a season? I replied that it was Maurice Richard, he of the loathed Canadiens (Go Bruins!). He then asked for his nickname. I said it was "The Rocket". He ordered us all to leave, probably secretly thanking me for giving him the afternoon off.
That's just 1 story. I bet a great majority of his students have similar ones that they still recall today.
