He was one of the sports announcers and hosts that I grew up with when I started watching sports. One of my favorite memories was when he revealed the March Madness brackets for which teams made it into the tournament itself. March Madness and the NFL on CBS won't be the same without him in front of our TVs/streaming devices. RIP

My condolences to Greg's family from a fellow Duhawk graduate of 1967. I first heard his smooth voice on KLOR as he broadcast from Loras College. We shared Father Schrader's English class and played intramural sports together against St. Ambrose. An admirer of his broadcasting career, I last saw and spoke with Greg at our 50th Loras College reunion in 2017. He will be missed by Loras alums as well as sports fans everywhere.

Greg and I shared a unique relationship on the grid iron at Loras College.
He was very fast and had hands of glue. We became an unbeatable combination of QB and split end. We stayed friends for 60 years and I attended his induction to the Pat Summeral Award ceremony at the super bowl in Miami. We met on several occasions over the years in Chicago. And he attended our wedding in 1965 in Clinton Iowa.
Once I had him pose with my College accounting professor at a CHICAGO LORAS meeting . With that picture,he signed a LORAS PENNANT which i framed with the picture-as a life time keep sake which
said----" TO MY QUARTERBACK "
I sent him an I miss you note in March and he wrote back that he had to take a break from the Ncaa -family matter. That is the last I heard from my dear friend and team mate . I will never forget him. May he rest in peace.

Your friend and QUARTERBWCKfor life,
Bob Jensen

Greg was my idol and my friend. I spent 17 years as his NFL and college basketball statistician and always knew I was working with a special person. He was always kind, so easy to work with, and just a lot of fun to be around. The jokes he would tell before a game were my favorite part of the whole experience. I am really going to miss him.

Greg Gumbel came into our lives through his brother Bryant.
Always a gentleman, always good company....down to earth and welcoming.
We shared our dear goddaughter Jillian Beth.....
Robert and I send our love and deepest condolences to his beautiful Marcy and daughter..... Bryant and June and Hilary, Jillian and Bradley and his many nieces, nephews and great nephews...
May his memory be a blessing.
We were so very fortunate to have known Greg.
May he rest in peace; his legacy will live on....
Lesley Nan and family.
A personal anecdote was walking up First Avenue with Greg and Bryant after Jillian´s baptismal ... it was a windy day....the wind caught the bottom of my shirtwaist dress....
Bryant´s response still resonates with me.....it was smilingly esoteric!

My condolences to Greg´s family. Greg and I were old friends we met in the early 70s when we were both working in Detroit. We both wanted to move back to Chicago and we both did about the same time again in the early 70s. I remember when Greg got his first broadcasting gig, it was a two year contract. He always told me his ambition was to be the voice of the Chicago Cubs. Greg was a first class guy in every way as the years went by. We stayed in touch just occasionally, but I was always proud to see him Succeed Sincerely, Ray Stagnato

Celebrating the life of Greg Gumbel´s Legacy Gumbel got his start covering sports on TV thanks to a tip from his younger brother, Bryant Gumbel. The future "Today" host was then working as a sportscaster in Los Angeles and heard that WMAQ-TV, and their hometown of Chicago, was auditioning for the same position. A former college baseball player, who was then working in sales Gumbel gave it a shot and got the job. He called sports for WMAQ for seven years before departing for larger markets.

By 1979, Gumbel was broadcasting to a national audience as an anchor of ESPN´S "SportsCenter." He was there until 1988, when he first joined CBS Sports as an NFL announcer. As sports fan across the U.S. got to know Gumbel, he distinguished himself with his low-key delivery. He made a point of avoiding getting in the way of the athletes´ feats´ choosing a minimalist delivery even as he made his love for sports clear.

In 1979, Gumbel began co-hosting the popular pre-game show "The NFL Today" alongside Terry Bradshaw. The two worked together until CBS lost NFL broadcasting rights in 1994, at which point Gumbel moved to NBC for a few years before returning to CBS.

Gumbel returned to NFL coverage at CBS, and in 2001 he covered Super Bowl XXXV, becoming the first black sportscaster to call a Super Bowl or any major U.S. sports championship. Gumbel returned to Super Bowl coverage three years later, and later in 2004, he begin helming "The NFL Today" again, doing so for two seasons.

At both CBS and NBC Gumbel covered the Olympics, first in 1994´s Winter games at Lillehammer, Norway, in Summer 1996 in Atlanta. When he returned to CBS in 1998, Gumbel begin covering the NCAA men´s basketball tournament, becoming a fixture of March Madness over the years. He Covered the fast pasted tournament for 25 years, only stepping aside in 2024.

Gumbel on March Madness

"It is such a unique, unique event on the sports calendar. And. I´m just happy to be a part of it." - from a 2021 interview with Brian Lord..

He would be missed, yet never be forgotten

Deepest Sympathy to the Family of Greg Gumbel,

We all know that he´s in a good place now, he reunited with the people that he worked with. As his Soul still lives on, as his Body Departs back to eternity Heaven.

My thoughts, prayers are with you.
