GREGORY BASS Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 13, 2025.
Gregory 'Greg' Bass, 70, left this world for his next adventure on Monday, March 10, 2025, surrounded by family. Greg was born in Corpus Christi, Texas on August 5, 1954, and grew up in Bellevue, Washington. He had three passions in his life – music, family and helping the disadvantaged. Greg received his undergraduate degree from the University of Washington and went on to get his JD from American University, Washington College of Law.

Greg believed his life really started when he saw The Beatles on Ed Sullivan. Music became a lifelong place of peace and happiness, and he enjoyed all types of music and took advantage of the music scene in each of the communities he lived in through his life as well as attending musical concerts in five countries.

Greg had a strong passion to help those that were disadvantaged, living and practicing law in Washington DC, Alabama, Washington, California, Connecticut and New York. He retired in August 2024 from the National Center for Law and Economic Justice in New York as Senior Attorney and continued work with NCLEJ, serving as editor, updating and coordinating attorney contributions for a legal practice manual for new and practicing attorneys.

Greg was a loving husband and father who enjoyed spending time with family, traveling, enjoying sports and new experiences. Favorite experiences included traveling to visit his son as he spent time playing baseball overseas including Germany and Australia.

Greg is survived by his wife of 46 years, Barb, son Travis Bass, sister-in-law Nancy Appleton, brother-in-law Warren Appleton and their sons Carter Appleton and Ford Appleton.

The family would be pleased if donations were made in lieu of flowers to World Central Kitchen, www.wck.org.

It was a great privilege to serve for many years as Greg's co-counsel in a class action pro bono litigation on behalf of public housing tenants with respiratory disabilities living in apartments with mold, water leaks, and other hazardous conditions. Greg will be remembered for his dedication to these pro bono clients and to many other vulnerable communities who, thanks to Greg's legal expertise and advocacy, were given the chance to receive the public benefits and disability accommodations of which they had been unlawfully deprived. Greg did good in the world and will be missed.

It was an honor to work with Greg on the Baez case helping to get rid of mold in public housing. He will be missed.

Greg dedicated himself to fighting for those who needed it most, a testament to the goodness in humanity. Barb and Travis, my heart goes out to you. May you find peace and comfort and whenever you hear a droll joke, a Beatles song, or see an amazing baseball play, know Greg's spirit is at work.
