Gregory Bonnett Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 4, 2025.
Gregory Carl Bonnett, affectionately known as "Big Bon," passed away on April 27, 2025, at the age of 59. Born in April 1966, Greg was a beloved brother, uncle, and friend whose gentle spirit, towering presence, and endless curiosity left an indelible mark on everyone he met.

Greg was a proud graduate of Vandalia Butler High School, Class of 1984. He spent his life nurturing a family legacy as Partner and Co-Owner of Bonnett's Book Store with his brother Kevin Bonnett, a cornerstone of Dayton's Oregon District since 1939. A third-generation steward of the store, Greg could always be found behind the desk, ready to talk with anyone about any subject. His insights were sharp, rich, and freely shared with anyone who stopped by the shop.

Greg was a true Renaissance man, gifted and knowledgeable in countless areas-an athlete, drummer, collector, and conversationalist. He excelled in sports, especially basketball and softball, where he was known to hit a softball a "country mile." He had an encyclopedic knowledge of music, movies, sports, and literature. His love of vinyl records was matched only by his devotion to live music and the more obscure, experimental corners of the music world. His musical hero was David Bowie, whose bold artistry and constant reinvention deeply resonated with Greg. He was fortunate to see some of the most influential artists in music history perform live.

He was passionate about the Cincinnati Reds, Cincinnati Bengals, Ohio State, and University of Dayton basketball. He loved bad sci-fi and horror movies almost as much as the classics and was always ready to debate them with wit and insight.

Greg was a gentle giant in both stature and soul-standing 6'6" tall, yet known for his warm smile, kindness, and the kind of generosity that made everyone feel welcome. He never met a stranger, and he brought joy, laughter, and thoughtfulness into every conversation. He was deeply loyal, fiercely loving, and unshakably kind.

Greg is survived by his brother, Kevin (Roberta) Bonnett; his nephew, Ian (Clara Coleman) Bonnett; and his grandniece, Peridot Coleman-Bonnett. He is also survived by his stepmother, Shirley J. Bonnett. He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter Bonnett and Utta "Judy" Bonnett; his grandparents, Harold and Mary Bonnett; and his lifelong friend, Dave Day.

In addition to his family, Greg shared a deep bond with his lifelong friends Paul Brigitzer and Joe Owens, whom he considered brothers in every way that mattered. Their decades of friendship were filled with laughter, music, debate, and unwavering support-a testament to the kind of lasting impact Greg had on those closest to him.

He will be deeply missed by family, friends, bookstore regulars, music lovers, and anyone lucky enough to have crossed paths with him.

In the spirit of Greg's love for music and community, those wishing to honor him are encouraged to play a Bowie album, support a local record store, or visit a neighborhood bookshop in his memory.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of Dayton.

Greg was one of those people you can never forget.
I knew him for 40 years through the book store.
Countless stimulating conversations, so many laughs!
Big man, big intellect, big heart, the world needs a lot more Gregs.
He will be missed.
RIP, brother...

A plan for a Memorial Gathering in Remembrance of my brother exists but will take time to sort out. When available, details will be shared here and my regular online forums. Feel free to follow Greg's Legacy.com page for updates.
