I remember him playing "Taps" for the program at Blandford Church, I still have the picture, and the tour at the James A. Fields House. He was a very friendly and open person whos life was cut way to short. I know his lovely wife will continue his legacy.

I had the privilege of meeting Mr. Cherry for the first time at last year's Dick Poplar Ceremony in Petersburg. I was so looking forward to seeing him again this year. Needless to say I am shocked and saddened that this will not be so. His passing is a loss for us all. My deepest condolences to the Cherry family. May the memories you have of him, as well as the esteem in which he was held by all, bring you comfort.

Brother Greg Cherry was a true historian, and an honorable southern gentlemen. Having met him and worked with him on living history demos, I grew quite fond of him and felt inspired by his pressence. His spirit and memory will remain with me forever.

I met Greg a couple of years ago at the Newsome House, while viewing a display done by my son's godfather. Greg immediately got onto the subject of history, of which I share a passion for as well. He even agreed to play Taps at a ceremony being held later that year at Greenlawn Cemetery in Newport News on Confederate Memorial Day, and an outstanding job he did. I will never forget him, and I am deeply saddened at your loss- our loss; the world is a lesser place without him. He will be missed, but not forgotten. I know he walks with God now. Dear Cherry Family,

I was Greg's sidekick and sister at the Visitor Center for many years. In fact, I interviewed him in 1997 and knew instantly he was the one we had to have at the Center. He was my assistant at the Center. Boy did we have a great time. We would laugh so hard and much, we could not wait to get to work the next day for more fun. We talked many a day about God, his dreams of being the mayor of NN, his purpose in coming back to the area, and ways we could save the city. We spent many an evening trying to reconcile the Gift Shop's cash register and him trying to talk me into writing a book with him. I loved his stories of his travels, school/college days, his yellow VW bug convertible, and even remember me and the older ladies at the Center helping him plan his first date with Saundra in Smithfield. My heart aches of his passing but I know he was saved and that gives me comfort. I hope you will find comfort also. We were blessed that God loan him to us for a while. He was a wonderful brother and friend.

I have much love and respect for him. His legacy will live on.

I was saddened by the news of the passing of Greg. Since his demise, I found myself reflecting on our brief period spent at Huntington High School and also of us having that opportunity to be members of the prestigious "Huntington High School Marching Band". As adults, when Greg returned home, I would often see or hear about him actively involved in our community. He has indeed left many memories to be cherished. Before I knew you I knew Greg. He called me the sandwich lady. Whenever he would take his mentees out, he knew he could count on me to make the sandwiches. He became Kevin's mentor seven years ago at a time in Kevin's life when he needed someone. Greg was there day or night to listen. I give much thanks and praise to Greg, because of his love and devotion Kevin is now a sophomore in college studying to become a civil rights attorney. He will be missed. Love always

The few years we knew each other at Peninsula Catholic and playing basketball together were short but he was always someone that was looked up to. We often celebrate the lives of those who contribute to others. I now ask how do I celebrate the life of one of God's Generals who sowed into my life and the lives of so many others. Saundra you and Greg helped to plant New Vision Outreach Ministry of Hampton Roads in the community. What can be said except "I miss him already". Nobody was quite like Elder Greg, no one could laugh like he laughed, or joke you like he joked you, but most of all I don't believe anyone showed love, or loved as hard as he loved. One of the greatest blessings of my life was seeing not only a beautiful woman on her wedding day, but a "glowing" man. How much joy and peace he had that day. The last time I spoke with him, we were talking about you and I told him, "Man, you know you are blessed" and he looked at me and said "I sure do". He was an awesome man of God not only in this community but in this world and his life reflected what he believed. But as for me, I remember him as a man who loved him some "Saundra". I may not understand why he's gone, but I surely know why he was here.

You have been in my thoughts and prayers every minute since Greg’s passing Saturday.

Greg was not only once a terrific employee for the Newport News Tourism Development Office, but also a friend and a true ambassador for the City of Newport News! His tireless dedication was for the development and promotion of tourism for our City and we will miss him terribly.

I have known Greg since 1997 when he first came to work with the Newport News Visitor Center. He was a fine, knowledgeable and kind man that everyone truly loved and admired whether it was an employee, group tour or guest visiting Newport News. His heart and sole was always in his job and for the development and promotion of tourism in the city he loved so dearly. In 2002, because of his hard work and devotion, he received the Employee of the Year Award for the City of Newport News.

After he left our Division, he went on to assisting the Newsome Museum & Cultural Center along with renovating and operating the James A. Field’s Home. One of his dreams became a reality when this home became part of the Virginia Civil War Trails. Greg served on numerous committees, taught, reenacted, mentored and spoke about our history to students, citizens and guests visiting Newport News. In fact, he was so well liked; group tours began requesting his step-on-guide services when they toured our city.

I am proud to have worked with a man that honestly lived and breathed tourism. Greg was such a wonderful representative for our city. In fact, I understand, one of the last things Greg said to the nurse before he passed was, “Have you visited the James A Field’s House? It was the site of the first black hospital in Newport News”.

In closing, whether or not Heaven has a tourism bureau or not, I can guarantee all the angels above are now rejoicing, learning from Greg, what a wonderful city Newport News is to not only live, but to visit and experience all the magnificent attractions including the James A. Fields House.

His memory and devotion will last in our hearts and minds forever, as he was the greatest ambassador for our City.

The fraternity of civil war re-enactors, both Union and Confederate will miss Greg; none will miss him like the USCT’s from across the country. At some point, when you are ready I will be at your service to share their responses with you. At some point also in the future, and with your permission we would like to conduct a grave side ceremony in his honor. I say in the future because we do not want to take away from the formal military honors you have planned. I suspect we will have re-enactors from far and wide because that is how he was know,respected and will be missed.

You and Elder Greg have a special place in the hearts of our family. You both welcomed O.J. into your family and through the relationship and fellowship he shared with you all his life just seemed to flourish. He blossomed and began to explore different facets of life. (I still think it was Elder that got him hooked on Sam Cooke). The times he spent at The Field's House, Relay for Life and in the Garden these are times that he speaks highly of. Elder Greg took the time to share with him and the other young men what it meant to really be a young man in today's society. He set high expectations for those young men and they truly respect and look up to him. I have said since Saturday after hearing of Elder's passing "Those are HUGE shoes to fill" We love you and want you to know that if there is anything that we can do for you, please do not hesitate to let us know.

I am so saddened by the loss of your dear child. I have known nearly all of your children(Marvin, Alvin, Janice, Carolyn, Greg, Tipp and the others)for nearly all of my life. We were raised together. Losing Greg is like losing family. He was brilliant, talented and gifted. We all wanted him here, but God had special plans for this special individual. I, as well as my family, share in your grief. We will all keep the entire Cherry Family in our prayers as you heal from this very difficult moment in time. I thank the family, especially Mrs. Clara Cherry, for sharing Greg with us. May God be with your entire family during this time.

I am truly sorry and sadden by Gregory's passing. I was at a loss for words when I received the news Monday. I looked for him Saturday at the music festival but I was not aware that "Special Blend" was there until near the end of the day.

I know you will miss him and the times you shared. Those who knew him in the world of re-enacting, at Colonial Williamsburg, and Black Heritage programming will miss him. I know I will miss him too! I will miss our discussions of Black tourism on the Peninsula, African American Heritage historic sites and the potential for more programs.

Even though we are sadden by Greg's homegoing we should also rejoice and say "Thank You God." He will not burdened by the pain, suffering or oxygen tanks any longer. He ran a good race. His tasks have been completed. I can see him with a smile on his face and trumpet or bugle in hand ready to join the angelic orchestra in any capacity. WELL DONE THY GOOD AND FAITHFUL SERVANT. YOU WILL BE MISSED.

Thank you for sharing Elder Cherry (My Friend) with us. Gabrielle, Stephen and I were extremely blessed by the love, fellowship and laughter we've shared with y'all. My Friend was a great mentor to Stephen! He showed us in action what God meant by a husband loving his wife. I know My Friend "lovvveeed" you and he wasn't hesitant to let the World know that at any time or anywhere. I'll never forget the "O Tom" story. Allow God to be your strength during this time. We love you very much and we are here for you. I love you Friend. :)

I am truly sorry to hear of your loss. I haven't known the two of you long, but you are always the same when I see you, always smiling and full of God's love. Greg will truly be missed. Dear Saundra, Greg always said he knew God loved him, because he had you for a wife. Greg walked 10 feet tall with you by his side as God's gift to him. Greg was a good man and always strived to make things better, in his work, community and relationships. He gained the love and respect of all the people he came in contact with. God's Love emanated out of you both. God is good and merciful and I pray he sustains you through this sorrowful time. We will surely miss Greg. You are dearly loved and highly respected, we are here for you just call anytime-Carmel & Wayne

Dear Saundra, my thoughts and prayers are with you today. You and Greg were very special to me. As I look back on our times together, I have wonderful memories of Greg as a friend, and my brother in Christ. I am blessed to have known him and I thank God He allowed Greg to touch my life and the lives of my family. Truly he was a blessing to all who knew him, and his memory is cherished. He will never be forgotten. Keep your chin up, Believe and know you are not alone. Although he is no longer here, no one will ever take his place.
