Gregory Coleman Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 6, 2025.
Gregory Earl Coleman, affectionately known as "Greg" and "Bug," passed away peacefully at the age of 65 on Saturday, January 18, 2025, at Northwest Health Porter Hospital in Valparaiso, Indiana, with his loving family by his side. Born on November 6, 1959, in Gary, Indiana, Gregory was the cherished son of the late Benjamin R. Coleman and Helen Duncan-Coleman. Though he lost his mother at a young age, Gregory carried her memory with him throughout his life.

Gregory attended Westside High School and later graduated from Howe Military Academy in Howe, Indiana. In 1979, he enlisted in the United States Army, where he served honorably until an injury led to his discharge. Driven by a passion for learning, Gregory pursued higher education at Indiana University Northwest, earning an associate's degree in Radiology.

His professional journey included roles at Bethlehem Steel Mill in Baltimore, Maryland, and Tradewinds Corporation in Gary, Indiana, where he advanced to Case Manager, dedicating himself to assisting individuals with disabilities. He also worked alongside his father in the family construction business, B.R. Coleman and Associates. Most recently, Gregory found fulfillment as a Transportation Specialist with the United States Veterans Association, where he was devoted to improving the lives of fellow veterans.

On December 14, 1985, Gregory married Robin Brown, and together they welcomed a daughter. Over the years, he became the proud father of three more children who were his greatest joy. Gregory often expressed his dream of leaving a lasting legacy for his children and never missed an opportunity to share how much they meant to him.

A faithful member of Washington Street Church of God in Gary, Indiana, Gregory treasured the friendships he formed there, including those with Pastor Mike and Minister Katie.

Gregory is preceded in death by his parents; sister Pamela Coleman-Jones; brother Khari Mack; and nephew Terrence Banket. He is survived by his beloved children: Amber Coleman (James Spencer) of Baltimore, Maryland; Deon Coleman of Gary, Indiana; Indya Coleman of Mississippi; and Kassidy Coleman of Gary, Indiana; grandson Harper Spencer of Baltimore, Maryland; siblings Michelle (Jerome) Coleman-Robinson, Oretha (Terrence) Banket, Benjamin (Nakille) Coleman Jr., and Jerome Mack; brother-in-law Harry Jones; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and his 7 month old cherished fur baby, Pepper.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, February 15, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at Powell Coleman Funeral Home, 3200 W. 15th Avenue, Gary, Indiana, officiated by Pastor Michael Dodson. A private burial will follow at a later date. Services are entrusted to Powell-Coleman Funeral Home.
