Gregory DuCharme Obituary
Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 5, 2025.
Greg DuCharme passed away peacefully on April 5th, 2025, surrounded by his loved ones.
Greg was born in Rock Hill, South Carolina, the second of seven children to Claude and Alton (Strickland) DuCharme. Greg's early years were spent in Raleigh, NC where Greg and his brothers created many fond memories in and around their house on Cranbrook Road.
In 1960, his parents drove cross country in their 1958 Chevy Brookwood station wagon with all seven kids in tow, to settle in Las Vegas, Nevada. Greg attended Las Vegas High School and transferred to the newly constructed Ed W. Clark High School to complete his junior and senior year. Greg was in the school's first graduating class in 1967. During his two years at Clark, Greg excelled academically and lettered in football, baseball, and particularly basketball. At 6'-3" he played both forward and center, and received numerous awards, recognitions, and accolades.
Greg attended the US Air Force Academy Preparatory School in Colorado where he planned to study aeronautical engineering and become a pilot, but a previously undetected heart murmur forced him to reconsider after his first year. He returned to Las Vegas, attending Nevada Southern University and played for the NSU's Rebels.
In 1969 Greg married his high school sweetheart, Maurine Reynolds, and they welcomed their first child, Cameron. The young family moved to Santa Cruz County and in 1973, they welcomed a daughter, Amy.
Greg spent his entire career in the construction industry as a pipe fitter installing fire prevention systems during the booming growth years in Silicon Valley. This career path served him well as it kept him mentally and physically engaged. His passion for sports remained strong, as both an active participant and a passive, enthusiastic fan. He played recreational basketball and coed softball for years. He became an avid cycler, participating in scenic rides as well as the annual Rosarito Ensenada 50-mile Fun Ride. You could count on him being in front of the TV during NASCAR season (most of the year). And let's not forget his annual spring trip to Las Vegas for the Mint 400 desert race.
Greg enjoyed the company of his good friends, his extended family, and his furry companions Banjo, Babaloo, Gladys, and Gracie. There was always a dog in the house.
After 30 years in Santa Cruz County, Greg retired to Pacific Beach, California to be closer to family. He set aside his basketball shoes and enjoyed the slower pace of the beach community. He traded his racing bike for a beach cruiser and roller blades, and his softball equipment for Over-the-Line gear. Golf also became a favorite as it provided to opportunity to spend time with his son, father, and brother on the golf course. He continued to master his hobbies (crossword puzzles always in ink), watch his favorite black/white westerns, and raise his beloved Australian sheep dogs, Gladys and then Gracie.
Greg is predeceased by his daughter, Amy (1976), his father, Claude (2011), his mother, Alton (2023), and younger brother Marc (2023). He is survived by son Cameron DuCharme, daughter-in-law, Tracy, grandchildren Jasmine McEnaney and Ryan McEnaney, brothers Steve DuCharme (Patty Becker) and Eric DuCharme (Tracy Elvin), sisters Martha DuCharme, Laura DuCharme Conboy, and Dawn DuCharme (Charles Grebing), and dozens of nieces, nephews, and grand-nieces and grand-nephews.
