Fifteen years after his death, I would like to say that I watch his dance videos every few years, and feel that he must be alive. Such a vital man with such an obvious sense of humor. I grew up on Hines Hines and Dad, followed Maurice and Gregory's careers. Loved Gregory's relaxed yet controlled sense of timing in his dance. His centering, his audience connect. Every few years I watch everything I can find on youtube. He lives forever in many people's minds. To me, he's that amazingly funny guy with joy in his dance and love in his tap. I'm not sure that ever really dies.

We are ever thankful for the great love and light that you brought into Negrita's life. Keep on dancing, the two of you, wherever you are. We know that you are in each other's arms. I loved his voice! He was an amazing vocalist and a shame that such a talent got lost behind his dancing and acting because he was truly the quintessential triple threat. If he'd have recorded an album - I'd have it right now. Thank you for the duet you did with Luther, Gregory! It brings me great joy! Please sing to my sister in heaven!

For Gregory...
WEEP NOT FOR ME
Do not weep for me when I no longer dwell among the wonders of the earth; for my larger self is free, and my soul rejoices on the other side of pain...on the other side of darkness.
Do not weep for me, for I am a ray of sunshine that touches your skin, a tropical breeze upon your face, the hush of joy within your heart and the innocence of babes in mothers arms.
I am the hope in a darkened night. And, in your hour of need, I will be there to comfort you. I will share your tears, your joys, your fears, your disappointments and your triumphs.
Do not weep for me, for I am cradled
in the arms of God. I walk with the angels, and hear the music beyond the stars.
Do not weep for me, for I am within you;
I am peace, love, I am a soft wind that caresses the flowers. I am the calm that follows a raging storm. I am an autumns leaf that floats among the garden of God, and I am pure white snow that softly falls upon your hand.
Do not weep for me, for I shall never die, as long as you remember me...
with a smile and a sigh.

To Gregory Hines,
I thought about you when I heard the sad news that Luther Vandross has passed away on July 1, 2005. You and Luther sang the beautiful song "So Amazing" and now he is singing up in heaven with you. You both are fantastic vocalist and entertainers, just to say the least. Now that Luther is with you, always know that so many people that you left here on earth love both of you. We are very sad that you both have passed to the other side and will be missed tremendously.
Luther, you are the Man that brought love and romance into our hearts. Enjoy your life in heaven and dance and sing with Gregory. I love you both.
Have fun singing with Barry White and Ray Charles. What a combination. That would have been a beautiful song, if you all got together and made a CD. God bless you and may you all rest in eternal joy.
Love,
Rosemary Ornelas

To one of the greatest tap dancers of all time. HAPPY BIRTHDAY Gregory! I met Gregory when we were in first grade at P.S. #46 in New York. We were in the same class for second and third grade also. He was one of the greatest tap dancers of all time. He also was a great actor too. I am so glad that I got a chance to see him perform on stage in Schenectady, NY in the 90's and was able to go backstage and talk with him. Rest in peace Gregory.

Gregory....by now you are probably with Sammy Davis, Fred Astaire and other hoofers, including my first tap dance teacher Ms. Vernal Barnes, Washington, DC. Tap your way along the streets paved of gold. Tap your way into the hearts and souls of spirits that are no longer in this realm.
I truly enjoyed seeing you in the movie Tap Dancer (hope that is right movie...having a senior moment here) with Sammy Davis, Jr. and Sandman and the youngest hoofer.. Sayvon.
To your partner....cry, holler, scream...do whatever u have to do to get throught the grieving process...but do it. In your heart rejoice and smile when you hear "your song". Most of all thank the Creator for the time you two shared, loved and honored.
U are in my prayers for strength, courage and comfort.

I am writing this as a friend of the late Mr. Gregory Hines and his fiancée. Mr. Hines was truly a brilliant performer. Even more, he was a brilliant human being. He lived a Christian life with Negrita, the love of his life, whom he absolutely adored. The beauty and goodness that resulted from their life together, along with his commitment to Christ, served to enhance both his performance on stage and his role in his private life. He was an extraordinary human being, a role model for all. Please smile when you think of him.

To the Hines family,
I was shocked and deeply saddened to hear of Gregory's death. I first met Gregory and his family in 1964 in the Catskills, when they were performing "Hines, Hines, & Dad." My stepfather was their publicist, and we spent some time between shows one weekend. I was 14 and Gregory told me a joke (about a man in the desert with a parachute) at dinner and treated me like an adult.
I have never forgotten the short amount of time I spent with him, because I was so moved and touched by the talent, humor, and generosity of spirit that I witnessed. I have watched Gregory's career reach the heights over the years with pleasure.
He will be missed, even by those whose lives were only very briefly touched by him.
My deepest symapthy.

Hello, everybody,
excuse my bad English. All Brazilian tap dancers and tap enthusiasts are very sad about such surprising news, including my wife, Brazilian tap dancer and teacher Cintia Martin, from Rio de Janeiro. Be sure that Mr. Gregory Hines was respected not only inside the US but all around the world, including and specially here in Brazil. And I am sure that in every place where tap classes or tap shows are presented, there are people surprised and really sad.
I am not a professional tap dancer, but it is not necessary to me to make me sure that what we have now to do is to remember about the great moments that all of us have "with" him: when we watched his films, or participated of his classes, or stayed astonished when he was performing. Remembering about him tap dancing, including talking about many happy moments, it is a good way to try to avoid this pain that is in our hearts now.... Remember his lessons of life, his example in spread tap dance everywhere, in turn tap dance more and more strong.
I am preparing a simple but special site for Brazilian fans of Mr. Hines, talking about his life and career, as a new section of my tap bulletin website.
I am searching (and finding) more information on the wwweb, and trying to include some photos from internet, found in sites such as IMDB, CNN, too (I am trying to discover the authors of such photos, to include the reference, but many sites don't show this information). It is not ready yet, but this is a very simple kind of honouring his importance and the love that we, Brazilians, had and will always feel about him.
Excuse once again my bad English, I hope you could understand what I write.
Best wishes,
Marcelo Batalha

Growing up, I never thought I would have the kind of icons or role models whose loss I would feel personally, even if I never met them. The day my mother called me in Beijing, China from the States with the news, I fell apart and realized that I do, in fact, have heroes. I teach tap in China and tell all of my students to go research Gregory Hines, trying to bring his legacy to a country newly discovering tap dance. He is an inspiration and his legacy will live on.
