Gregory Lane Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 7, 2025.
Gregory Charles Lane left this earth on July 21, 2025, at the age of 65 in Austin, Texas. To say he left an impression is an understatement. Greg didn't just walk through life; he lit it up.

Greg grew up in Little Rock, Arkansas, where he formed deep, lifelong friendships, developed a love of nature and the outdoors, and cultivated a strong sense of mischief, nurtured by his incredible mom, Lou Lane. His Arkansas upbringing gave him his distinct unmistakable Southern drawl, equal parts charm, tomfoolery, and warmth, which became as much a part of him as his laughter, storytelling, and uncanny ability to make people feel right at home.

He had an extraordinary 40+ year career in advertising, as a producer, creative director, mentor, and trickster, building lifelong friendships while traveling the world to create commercials for some of the world's biggest brands, working with agencies like The Richards Group, GSD&M, Berry Brown, and DDB.

While doing a job that would send most people over the edge, Greg's cool head and love of problem-solving allowed him to take everything in stride. His secret sauce was being calm in chaos, the creative spark, and steady hand who made teams feel capable, seen, and somehow always a little funnier.

Greg never met a stranger and loved hearing people's stories. He had the unique ability to make you feel like the most important person in the room. His family lovingly called him "the mayor," because he collected friends, anecdotes, and fostered connections everywhere he went.

He had a relentless curiosity and a mind wired for discovery. Mornings began with coffee, the New York Times crossword, and a deep dive into Reddit rabbit holes-especially threads filled with history, obscure facts, and vintage photos. He devoured documentaries, loved a good debate, and could make any topic fascinating. Often the smartest person in the room (though he'd never admit it), Greg's knowledge was matched only by his humility and humor. Conversations with him made you think deeper, laugh harder, and see the world a little differently.

Greg had a deep love for food and entertaining, and his passion for grilling was contagious. He and Amy brought family and friends together around the table and under the stars for dinners that stretched late into the evening with amazing food, free flowing wine, strong cocktails, stories, and games that got louder with every round. A devoted charcoal purist, Greg took genuine joy teaching others his techniques on his dad's vintage PK grill. Evenings were about fellowship, and Greg was always at the center of it-tongs in hand, grin on face, lighting up the night.

Though not religious, Greg was deeply spiritual and had an extraordinary understanding of human behavior and motivation. He saw beyond the moment and always met his people where they were. He led with empathy, always willing to listen, show up, and play the long game.

Greg's greatest role was that of husband, father, son, best friend, and Poppy. He loved his mama with all his heart, never missing a Sunday call. He made the bed every morning and, through example, showed his family how to live with grace, grit, and humor. He was the kind of dad who always put his kids first and the kind of husband who showed up-in the little ways and the big ones.

He loved dogs, and though he begrudgingly began fostering Greyhounds with his family, it was Greg who ultimately insisted on adopting the third and fourth. He was obsessed with a breed called the Carolina, and to his family's ongoing amusement (and slight embarrassment), he would stop strangers on trails to ask if their dog was one. The time someone finally responded yes, everyone screamed and cheered for him.

He is loved and survived by his wife and best friend, Amy Brotman; his daughters, Hallie Lane McElvery and Ella Brotman; his sons, Miles Lane and Mason Lane; his children-in-law, Jimmy McElvery and Ashlyn Brandenburg Lane; his granddaughters, Lily, Charlotte, and Carolina; and his beloved dogs, Penny Lane, Slim, Bunny, and Buddy-as well as too many lifelong friends to name.

If there is a Great Beyond, it just got greater. Because we know he's there now, standing at the bar, not the table, telling a story with that twinkle in his eye, making someone laugh so hard they cry. To know Greg was to love him, and to have a "Greg" story. And those stories will keep him close forever.

So, in his spirit go for a ride on your mountain bike. Take a walk in the woods. Watch an old film. Share a funny story. Play a prank. Pour yourself an Irish whiskey. Listen to Pink Floyd. Grill a steak. Laugh long and hard with your people. Tell someone you love them.

We're all better people for knowing him.

Wish you were here, Arkie.

In lieu of flowers, Greg would love you to make a donation to NPR, PBS, or your local CASA.

I was friends with Greg at Berry*Brown Advertising and, although we didn´t talk very often after that, I count myself lucky that we crossed paths.
While we worked together, Greg came up with brilliant creative ideas, offered warmth and friendship to everyone he met, and made it fun to come to work, every day.
I offer prayers of comfort for all of his family may his memory be a blessing.

GL!
Love you so much. Thank you for you. I smiled through tears when I read "Greg stories". Then I laughed at so many of them as I went through my memories. Great, wonderful, "only Greg" moments. Do you know our company is here today because you kept hiring me? God´s hand on and through you Angel Man. May you continue to be blessed. I loved that you and Amy found each other. I love her energy. Kindred spirits. May she, your children, your mama and family be blessed and comforted. I am a better person for knowing you. Thanks for lighting up this world-and the next. Love you. Thank you.
