Gregory Mize Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Nov. 20 to Nov. 27, 2012.
Gregory K. Mize, 66, of North Eastham and Brewster passed away peacefully at his home on November 17, 2012 after a long and courageous battle with cancer. He was the beloved partner of Jacquelyn Panzer and the loving father of Emily Mize of Chatham, MA, Paul Mize, daughter-in-law Ginger, and grand-daughter Hallie of Melbourne Beach, FL. Doc Mize, as he liked to be called, came to Cape Cod from Chatham, NY to operate Countryside Antiques in Brewster after a career as a Pediatric and Clinical Psychologist for abused children. He was a decorated Vietnam War Marine Staff Sergeant, receiving among his many honors, four Purple Hearts, a Navy Cross and a Bronze Star. Besides his love of antiques and history, he loved sailing and traveling. His home in North Eastham has a spectacular view of Cape Cod Bay, where Greg and Jackie enjoyed many evenings watching the sun set. He was the son of the Harlie (deceased) and Doris Mize of Saint Michaels, Maryland and brother Andrew Mize of Melbourne Beach, FL. Memorial visitation will be held on Saturday, December 1st from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Nickerson Funeral Home, Eldredge Parkway, Orleans with a memorial service beginning at 1pm. Burial will follow in the Orleans Cemetery on Tonset Road. The family would like to thank VNA Hospice for their kindness and support. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to VNA Hospice, 434 Rte 134, Bldg D, South Dennis, Ma 02660.

Greg came to mind today and I Googled his name to locate him. I am saddened to find that he has passed. I met Greg when I was practicing law and he, his practice in Superior, WI back 30 years ago. We had many great conversations that stayed with me long after he had moved away.
It looks from the pictures that he had traveled to China. I now teach at Jinan University in Guangzhou. Wish I had seen him again.

I was a fraternity brother and close friend of Greg's when he was at the University of Minnesota, Duluth. I have many fond memories of deer and duck hunting with him and a great Sauna afterwards. Also great parties at his Lake Place in Canyon Minnesota. Many pleasant afternoons were spent up there with his son Paul and Paul's Mom, Lisa. Greag always had a friendly, helpful attitude and will be missed by many.

Doc Mize was the thread that sewed our family back together during difficult times. He will be missed by all. His trench coat and duck boots and what he refered to as bed head were a site to see coming down the hall at Berkshire Medical center and in Lenox, Ma. We love you Doc. All 7 of us are lucky to have known you. Rest in peace. God bless your family. Patients in need and you were there. Love Ya Doc

Greg & I were close ETK friends at UMD. Many great memories at Nichols Lake, Canyon, MN. Bird hunting, scuba diving for wrecks in Lake Superior, sailing to Isle Royale with son Paul & his Mom Lisa, rebuilding his Maverick in -50 deg weather. And of course, a sauna afterwards! Rest in peace Greg -

America and the Cape has lost a hero this month. "Doc" Mize was an extraordinary Marine. His Navy Cross, Americas second highest award for bravery and four Purple Hearts reflect his Gallantry in action. Few servicemen have met his standard of bravery. Greg was bright , articulate and driven.
He is a friend and will be missed.
