Gregory "Greg" Peterson Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 20, 2025.
Binghamton - Gregory Anson Peterson, a longtime resident of the greater Binghamton area of New York, passed from this world on December 6, 2025 at Mercy House of the Southern Tier. Born on January 31, 1945 in Nyack, NY, Greg was 80 years old. He lived his life with integrity, and met his passing with readiness and clarity. His quiet wisdom and thoughtful counsel are deeply missed.

He is predeceased by his father, Charles Anson Peterson, his mother, Minerva Agnes Peterson, his sisters, Alice Titus, and Judith Arlene Peterson and his brother Charles Edward Peterson.

Greg is survived by his daughters Jennifer Chioma Teolis and Ezrimayr Chioma, granddaughter Katherine (Devon) Mackinnon and nieces and nephew: Kathleen Peterson, David Peterson, Theresa (Thomas) Schiffhauer, Amy (Scott) Wilson, and Paige (Michael) Hickey, and their many children, and grandchildren.

Greg served his country from 1962 to 1966 in the Air Force.

Following eighteen months of training to become a Medical Laboratory Technician, he served at bases in Texas, Mississippi, Georgia, Florida and Michigan. He recalled his military service to his country, and the service the country provided to him, as a member of the American Legion.

He continued to train and excel in the same field for the rest of his life, working at a number of hospitals and medical facilities as a lab technician and supervisor. Greg was honored to work in the medical system, often running the lab on his own, through the night, providing vital information to assist in the care of countless patients.

Using the benefits of the GI Bill, Greg received a Bachelor's of Philosophy Degree from SUNY Binghamton in 1975, which opened his mind to new horizons.

He attained his third-degree black belt in Washin-Ryu Karate under the training of Hidy Ochiai. Greg taught karate in the Broome County Community College Washin-Ryu program and later joined a Tai Chi class taught by an old friend. In time, he also led that Tai-Chi class, and practiced Tai-Chi daily for the remainder of his life.

Greg was a lifelong motorcyclist, who traveled the north eastern states by back roads, and out to the west coast more than once. Traveling the back roads of upstate New York was a spiritual experience for him, to which he always returned. He became a long standing member of the Yamaha 650 Society, the American Motorcyclist Association and the Broome County Sportsman's Association where he was often found on Tuesday evenings.

He remained in touch with friends from all stages of his life and is remembered fondly by all who knew him.

A special thank you to all the good people at Mercy House for his care in his final days, especially Galye, Abby and Katey.

A heartfelt thank you to those who helped to ease his passing in his final days: Wade, Pearl, Steve and David, Ezri, Jen and Kat, David and Teri, Joe and Christy, and all the many friends and visitors who called or came to see him in his final weeks.

In lieu of flowers Greg wished that you would think fondly of him and be kind to each other, but if you feel so moved, you can donate additional memorial trees to a forest in need.

A celebration of life will be held in the Binghamton area in late April. Interment will be at the Rockland Cemetery, Sparkill, NY in early May. All who knew and loved Greg are welcome to attend. For more information/rsvp, please send your contact information to [email protected]

I worked under Greg P at Ideal hospital for couple of years before being
transferred to Binghamton General hospital and then worked with him
there for several years. Always got along and enjoyed working with him
and we had a similar interest in motorcycles. He actually worked on my
little Honda 185 once to get it going again one spring which I really ap-preciated. So it was with sadness that I heard about his passing.

I'm His 2nd daughter - my name has evolved to "Ezri." His demise was mostly unexpected, and at times, it felt upon us. But we just couldn't imagine his strong, balanced, athletic body giving up yet - "we've got 5 more years," we kept saying to each other. I went to New York to help him work out how he was going to recover. We spent 3 weeks together and almost daily phones calls wrapping our heads around his challenges. I pushed - He was honest, kind, straight forward and always, highly sensitive to being discreet and low-key. He defended the weak, protected those he cherished, and made friends with his 'enemies,' if they wanted to. His tender heart had met its last challenge. Once he understood that, he stopped fighting. He jumped on that ride and coasted home, just like he lived life. I added one of my favorite photos from my last visit - happy as a clam, wool socks and hat, doing projects. I miss his calm voice so much - he wasn't the calm in a storm, he moved away and around the turbulence of storms. And that allowed him to navigate the world in a special way. I donated a memorial tree, because riding through the trees was his happy place. I will arrange for a Celebration of life in late April. Please reach out or follow him on Legacy for updates.

To the family of Greg Peterson,

I want to express my deep condolences to the passing of a very dedicated man who lived life well. He was a man of inner strength, which he diligently cultivated. He and I continued to correspond every year, and I always appreciated hearing from him around Christmas time. He was a quite good man and I will miss him. Hidy Ochiai
