Gregory Wells Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 9, 2025.
Gregory James Wells of Kila, Montana, passed away on December 10, 2024.

Greg was born in Tacoma, Washington, on May 25, 1955. He was the first of nine children of Hugh Wells, who preceded him in death, and Nancy Nylund. Greg was a much-loved older brother and friend to his seven surviving younger siblings. Greg grew up in Puyallup, Washington, and lived much of his life there. After high school, Greg joined the Air Force and became a jet engine mechanic.

After serving his country, Greg returned to the West Coast and eventually settled in Puyallup where he raised his two children, Joleen and Matt, with his first wife, Laura (passed in 2016). He spent over 25 years as a steel fabricator, working on a wide range of major projects including the Narrows Bridge in Tacoma. Greg had incredible work ethic, often working seven days a week to support his kids and their sports habits. He always had to be doing something and was capable of fixing anything. And if he had the option, he would rather make something himself rather than buy it from a store.

In 2006, Greg sold his home and moved to Montana with his wife, Chris. There they found a beautiful log cabin nestled in the mountains that he quickly grew to love. Their home in the woods became the family gathering place in the summer, overflowing with relatives catching up, relaxing afternoons at the creek, and many tall tales told around the campfire. Greg's home was always open to family and friends, especially those passing through on longer journeys. He loved to take his own journeys, too - his Harley, the open road and a few pit-stops for a cold beer along the way were some of Greg's favorite pastimes. Over the last few years, he had reconnected with his Catholic faith and was a parishioner at St. Matthew in Kalispell, Montana.

Greg will be remembered for his generous spirit and his mischievous laugh. He always had a twinkle in his eye that let you know he was definitely going to tease you about something, an opportunity he would not miss. In fact, some of his younger sisters may have occasionally called Greg "grouchy," but put a small child in front of him and you would see him melt. He was a softie!

Greg is survived by his wife, Chris, his dog, Gus, his two children, Joleen Rocks and Matt (Alicia) Wells, and two stepchildren, Amanda (Josh) Jenson and Kyle (Kristen) Shafer. He is also survived by his mother, Nancy, and his three grandsons: Jim, John, and Joey Rocks. Greg also leaves behind 3 brothers: Jack, Russ, and Paul; 4 sisters: Lori, Mary, Annie, and Kathie; and too many nieces and nephews to count. He will truly be missed by so many who loved him.

Funeral mass for Greg will be held on Saturday, March 15, 2025 at 11:00 am at All Saints Catholic Church in Puyallup, WA. Reception to follow.

Greg was such a great welder, he brought his big welder all the way to Columbia Heights to weld on my ratrod in about 2014. He was such a hard worker and a great friend, I will miss him dearly. Brian Toole
