Celebrating the Life of Greta Ferkel, Ed.D.

Greta Ferkel, a beloved daughter, sister, and friend, passed away on July 8th, 2024, in Pennsylvania. Born on November 5th, 1963, and raised in Ellicott City, Maryland, Greta lived a life rich with love, music, achievement, and boundless enthusiasm. She was the cherished daughter of Donald and the late Marta Ferkel and a devoted sister to Delwyn Ferkel. She is survived by her aunts Betty (Dennis) Stevens, Rosa Lee Anders, Linda (Larry) Delp, Shirley (Jim) Hire, her uncle Richard Miller, and a host of cousins, friends, and colleagues who will deeply miss her. She was predeceased by her uncle Harold Miller. Greta left behind four beloved pets. Three dogs and one cat: Doc, Koa, Luna and her cat Dewey.

Greta's journey was marked by a relentless pursuit of knowledge and a dedication to education. She recently earned a Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) from National Louis University and held a Master of Music Education (MME) from the University of North Texas as well as a Bachelor of Music Education (BME) from the University of Hartford. Her academic pursuits were complemented by her dynamic career, where she made a significant impact in the field of online education.

As the Managing Director of HU Online at Harrisburg University of Science and Technology, Greta was a visionary leader who transformed online education. Her tenure at Harrisburg University began in 2019. Greta's innovative approach and strategic thinking were instrumental in developing high-performing teams and creating technology-enhanced learning environments. Her expertise in distance education, digital asset management, and online program development has left an indelible mark on the academic community.

Before her impactful work at Harrisburg University, Greta held various leadership roles, including Executive Dean at Adler University, Vice President at Rasmussen College, and Director of Program Development at Deltak. Greta began her career as a music educator in Connecticut and her career was a testament to her commitment to advancing education and making it accessible to all.

Greta's dedication to her work was matched by her vibrant personality and diverse interests. She was an accomplished musician, and her love of music was evident in all aspects of her life. She was an avid athlete, having played college softball and soccer at the University of Hartford. Her adventurous spirit led her to many wonderful experiences fishing with her brother Del and as a motorcycle enthusiast, embarking on epic cross-country road trips. Greta also had a passion for improvisational comedy, training at The Second City Training Center and performing with an improv troupe in Chicago. Additionally, she played a vital role in creating safe rehearsal spaces for the stagecraft community, fostering inclusivity and support for all.

In June 2024, Greta was honored as a Women of Influence by the Central Penn Business Journal, recognizing her professional achievements, community involvement, and commitment to mentoring. This award was a fitting tribute to a woman who dedicated her life to creating change, breaking barriers, and leading with integrity and compassion.

Greta's life was a tapestry of remarkable achievements, cherished relationships, and unforgettable adventures. Her legacy will continue to inspire those who knew her and those who benefit from her contributions to education. She leaves behind a world that is better for having had her in it. She will be deeply missed and forever celebrated.

Dear Greta´s family - I know it´s been a year since Greta passed, but I just found out today. I lived with Greta freshman year at Univ. of Hartford. I will never forget how smart she was, how silly and sweet, too. I was going to reach out to her as this fall is our 40th UHa reunion. She will be missed. Please accept my condolences. Just something I wrote for the Celebration of Life that I never got a chance to share. Seems appropriate to share during this holiday season:

I first met Greta at Stallions, and from that moment, I knew she was someone special. Her infectious laughter, radiant smile, and boundless energy were impossible to ignore. Greta had a way of brightening any room she entered, making everyone feel welcome and valued. Her positivity was contagious, and her zest for life was truly inspiring.

One of the things I will always remember about Greta was her incredible generosity. She had a heart of gold and was always ready to help others, whether it was through acts of kindness, words of encouragement, or simply being there when needed. Gretas selflessness was evident in everything she did, and her compassion touched the lives of so many.

I recall a particular instance that perfectly captures Gretas spirit. It was our first Christmas Eve, and she spent the day smoking a brisket, which I thought was our dinner. Later, she came home with bags full of rolls and made sandwiches with the brisket, told me to get in the car and we drove around Harrisburg handing out those sandwiches to the homeless. It left a lasting impression on everyone involved. This act of generosity was just one of many examples of how Greta lived her life-always thinking of others and spreading joy wherever she went.

Greta was not only generous but also incredibly adventurous. She had a passion for exploring new places, trying new things, and living life to the fullest. Whether it was traveling Chicago, DC, Tennessee, Colorado, fishing in the rain, riding motorcycle, race cars or simply trying a new hobby, Greta approached every adventure with enthusiasm and a sense of wonder. Her adventurous spirit was a testament to her love of life and her desire to experience all that the world had to offer.

But beyond her generosity and adventurous spirit, Greta was a true friend to many. She had a way of making everyone feel special and appreciated. Greta was always there to celebrate our successes, to support us in our struggles, and to offer a listening ear when we needed it most. Her friendship was a gift that we will all cherish forever.

Let us remember the many ways she touched our hearts. Her legacy is one of love, kindness, and an unyielding zest for life. She taught us the importance of living each day to the fullest, of finding joy in the little things, and of always being there for one another.

I learned of Greta's passing this afternoon. I am stunned and deeply saddened. Greta and I had the opportunity to work together on projects and in the doctoral program at NLU. We last spoke at commencement in June. She was so happy and I am thankful that we shared a great moment of joy on that day. An incredibly intelligent and thoughtful person. Greta will be missed by so many who she had the opportunity to touch, including the animals that she loved so much.

I have just learned of Greta´s passing, and I am in shock and heartbroken. We last spoke in June at NLU Commencement. She was so happy and excited. We were classmates in the program and did our internship together. At first she was my mentor, I mean, she was really really smart, and then she became my friend. She was always loving to me, my son, and my dog. I love Greta. She made my life better and I miss her deeply.

It´s heartwarming to see her smiling face in these pictures. I had the privilege of working with Greta twice in my career - first at Adler University and then as a partner at Validated Insights. Greta's passion for helping people was truly wonderful. She brought so much joy to everyone around her. It's hard to believe she's no longer with us, and we won't see her smiling face again. My deepest condolences to her family and friends, and sending much love to all who are missing her right now.

Greta, I miss you. You had such a huge heart, you were so full of life, ideas and passion to educate and help others. You impacted the lives of so many people. I will miss talking dogs, chicago, educational theory and everything else. I will miss reading your dissertation interviews and hearing your excitement about the findings. Those interviews were amazing and are a testament to your tenacity and your ability to communicate connect with people.

I offer my deepest condolences to Greta's family and all that knew her. I had the good fortune of working with Greta for a handful of years at Rasmussen and the even better fortune of becoming a friend of hers during her time in Chicago. Greta was so much fun to be around, and she may have had the biggest heart of anyone I've ever met. Our world would be a better place with more Gretas, and I'll miss her dearly.

I have known Greta for the last five years. She was a friend and mentor. She lit up any room she arrived in with a passion like no other. She helped others, I remember one time I went around with Greta around Harrisburg as she worked tirelessly to give food to the homeless. She was selfless; I will never forget her words, "These people are hungry; I have been blessed to never be hungry, not like that." Her selfless actions and dedication to education and, more so, to people around her will stand as a testament. You will be greatly missed, Greta; I regret not being able to steal even five more minutes of your time and boundless Wisdom. You were the best of us, and words cannot describe the sorrow and gaping hole your absence leaves. May you rest in peace, as you will never be forgotten in the hearts and minds of those you impacted over your life.

My heart breaks, and it is so heavy that I will never hear that laugh again! You brought so much to the table that you never even knew! I hope you are running around in heaven, causing good trouble, hanging with all those pups, and listening to some fantastic music. We will never forget you, my friend. God speed!

Sometimes the hardest lesson to learn when losing someone you love is that you were put in their life to show them what love is, and they were put in your life to show you what love isn't. You will always have a special place in my heart. Rest well love.
Greta famous quote was "life is not a dress rehearsal".

I am so thankful to have known Greta for the short time I did. She was a motivating leader that knew how to have fun. I really enjoyed working on projects with her over the summer. What stands out to me the most is in the midst of a crazy time she kept conversation positive and actually got to know her team members and how they worked. I loved learning more about her love for Chicago and her celebration tour after graduation, kyle scwarber, broadway shows and king fish. She really was a huge part of Harrisburg University and we miss her dearly.

Greta was more than just a colleague; she was a dear friend, a vibrant soul whose light shone brightly on everyone around her. My heart aches with the immense loss of her presence. Her kindness, her laughter, and the genuine care she showed were a gift to all who knew her. The world feels a little less colorful, a little less joyful without her.
