Greta Holst Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 11, 2025.
Greta Nilsen Holst, age 96, passed away peacefully on August 5, 2025, in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Born on February 25, 1929, in Brooklyn, New York, Greta spent her early childhood years in Brooklyn, but moved to Griggstown, New Jersey as a young teenager. She grew up with a sharp mind and a love for learning. She graduated from Princeton High School, where she excelled in math and science. She worked at Squibbs Corporation for several years before her children were born.

Greta shared nearly seven decades of marriage with her beloved husband Bob, who preceded her in death. Their union of 69 years was marked by true devotion and the creation of a loyal family. Together they raised three children: Anna Holst, Karl (Ellen) Holst, and Robert Holst, Jr. Greta also leaves behind five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren who brought her much joy.

A woman of many talents and passions, Greta found happiness in the simple pleasures of life. She loved baking Scandinavian cookies and took pride in growing every type of plant she could. Boating on the Pamlico Sound with her husband was one of her favorite pastimes. She also enjoyed reading and spending time with her cat and the family's dogs. Christmas Eve was her favorite day of the year, and she proudly made a traditional Norwegian feast for her family and any friends that stopped by. Greta had a witty sense of humor and would happily serve coffee any time of the day or night.

Greta was a devoted Christian, and her faith was quiet but steady throughout her life.

Greta Nilsen Holst will be remembered for her laughter and love for family. May her memory bring comfort to those who knew and loved her.
