Gretchen Dock Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 22, 2024.
Gretchen Dock passed away peacefully at home on October 18, 2024, after a hard fight with dementia. Gretchen was born on July 10, 1950 to Norman and Phyllis (Davis) Dock. She grew up on Sunset Farm on Intervale Road in Bethel, surrounded by her four siblings, the Morgan horses her parents bred and any number of other animals. Gretchen graduated from Gould Academy in 1968, excelling in music and athletics as well as the classroom. Gretchen was a proud inductee into Gould's Athletic Hall of Fame in 2018.

Gretchen studied music education at Boston University, graduating in 1972. She taught elementary school music in Gorham, ME and Newton, MA, opening the eyes of innumerable youngsters to the virtues of Joni Mitchell and the Beatles. Gretchen later returned to Boston University for a master's degree. She launched herself on a long and successful career in the technology industry, moving from technical writing to marketing, management and consulting.

Gretchen and her life partner, Anne Robbins, joined forces in 1988 and married in 2004. They lived and worked in the Boston area for many years before buying a 170-year-old house on twenty-eight acres in western Massachusetts, where they merrily set themselves to making the house and grounds shine.

Gretchen was renowned for her laugh and her work ethic. She was never happier than when she had her shoulder to the wheel of a project or was making a bit of mischief at work. Gretchen was a force for good, including good behavior, writing, cooking and housekeeping. From childhood, she had a knack for facing down bullies. Children and animals, both astute judges of character, adored her. She absorbed from her mother and from her maternal grandparents, Leslie E and Marie Swan Davis, the practice of generosity and the art of lending a hand with a matter-of-fact grace, to the enduring benefit of her family, friends and communities.

Gretchen will be missed by everyone who had the chance to know her, but most especially by her wife Anne, her brothers Stephen (Carolyn) (Port Clyde, ME) and Roger (Glastonbury, CT), her sister Nancy (San Francisco, CA), her nephews Jim Dock, Tim Dock and Alex Jacobsen and niece Victoria Sinn and their families and her long-time friends Sue Ellen Richardson and Doug Topper (Mason Township) and Diane Cross (Bethel). Gretchen was predeceased by her parents, her brother (and buddy) Jimmy and her sister-in law Susanne.

If you wish to honor Gretchen's memory, give generously where you think best, with an open heart and open mind, as Gretchen always did.

Gretchen you are on my mind as I plan a memorial event for my sister Suzy. You were part of my family since 1970 and shared many
laughs and adventures with us. You were outstanding in everything you did and a joy to be around.

Gretchen was an incredible person & marketing genius. We met when she taught marketing at the Boston Women's Center. I wanted the information faster than the class allowed so I worked with Gretchen 1-1 and she told me I could do my own marketing.

She was right but I don't think I would have succeeded without her support as I launched my handyman business and later a non-profit for women business owners serving homeowners.

The world has lost a truly remarkable person, someone who always lent a helping hand to those in need. I'm glad I had the opportunity to work with Gretchen and proud to call her a special friend.

Gretchen was such a good friend to me! We lost touch. I wanted to add her to the Gould Academy facebook page. Today I was determined to find her on the internet. I didn't want to find her here. I am so sorry and devastated that she died with dementia. She was too young for that. What a terrible loss for you Anne. I'm glad she found you and that you were able to have an open loving relationship with her. I've never stopped loving Gretchen and I never will. I am so sorry.

I always thought I would see her again... Gretch! I spent the day after they found me visiting at her home at the beginning of my sophomore year and her senior year at Gould, to tell us her best friend ,my sister , was dead.
She was my biggest support through that wounded year and after for a number of years.
I watched the sunlight of that long day crawl across the wooden floor of the farmhouse.
She came home with me for weekends, she laughed so much and played the piano and picked up my parents and younger sister so much. I´m forever grateful and sorry we lost touch.

Almost 60 years ago, Gretch used to come to visit my closest friend´s family on Islesboro. She went to Gould with my friend´s older sisters, and how I loved her! She was so much fun and funny and she made us laugh and laugh! I remember her as if it were yesterday.
I am sending love to all who loved her.

In reading Bonnie's obituary, I discovered Gretchen's as well. My heart breaks for all of you at this multiple whammy of both deaths and the pain of seeing both of these vital, intelligent women fighting for their lives even as they lose ground. I feel the loss because Nancy has Alzheimer's and I have Parkinson's. Know that I hold wonderful memories of the time we took care of Alex and were not as prepared as we might have been for gender differences. Thank you for the ways we shared life. Love, Randa
