I worked with Gretta in Salt Lake Council of Women and she always had such a twinkle in her eye. She could read people so well. She was one of the most intelligent women I have ever met. I remember how John always came with her and how they supported each other.

We all watched for th sincere smile and those cherry eyes. She was always ready to help in any way she could.

John was her partner. what a couple. Their home burning was so sad. They were our neighbors in the Cove. I especially loved Gretta from Committees in SLCW. I will truly never forget my friend.

Gretta, What a Lady and a friend. Thank you for the many years you served Women's State legislative Council as our Parliamentarian, especially the last 2 years during my presidency. I loved watching the Army-Navy football game with you. We said we would watch the game again this year together, but its okay as I know you will be watching with Johnny. I will miss you. You 2 have fun up there. Love you.

I am saddened to learn that we lost Gretta last Wednesday. Gretta has been a dear member of my family circle of friends since I was a little girl. I first met Gretta and John at a bureau picnic where I was introduced to my father's "best friends from the Bureau of Mines". My dad was Mark Howcroft, chief chemist at the bureau, and John and Gretta were good friends. Whenever I ran into Gretta while visiting my Dad at work she was a ray of sunshine with that beautiful smile of hers. My Dad's face was very disfigured due to a medical condition that restricted circulation to half of his face causing his right cheek to atrophy away, leaving the right side ofhis face to be only skin stretched over the bones of his skull. Dad was very self-conscious and would never allow a full face picture to be taken of him. He told me there were only two women whom he felt didn't pity him or think he was ugly: mother and Gretta Baur. Whenever he encountered her, Gretta always gave him a big hug- and it was a hug from the heart. The respect and admiration the two had for each other was remarkable.
I married David V. Behunin, an exceptional bass singer, soloist of the Salt Lake Symphonic Choir, and well-known by local musicians (Maurice Abravanel, Ardean Watts etc.). Dave went to work at the Bureau of Mines and he got to know Gretta. She hired him often to sing at her club meetings. Dave and I had season tickets to the Utah Symphony and we would often see John and Gretta there. Gretta and I would chatter away and John and Dave would stand by and nod pleasantly at the appropriate times.
I have many fond memories: Daddy picking flowers from our garden to take to work for Gretta and Mae... Pretty Gretta in the hall at the Bureau, always a smile on her face and a hug for Dad, and then slipping into very technical "chemistry talk" with Daddy... Sitting with Gretta at Kay Anderson's funeral, both of us wishing Bill well... Visiting with her at bureau picnics, and chem-lab get togethers after the bureau closed...
I've lost a special link in the chain of my life and I'm going to miss her.
Sincerely,
Nancy Howcroft Behunin

Greta was a joy to visit. I especially liked listening to her stories about her childhood on the farm.

I am so very sorry that Gretta has passed away, and I wish that I could be present for her memorial service. Unfortunately I will not be in town on that date, but I will be thinking about and praying for Gretta and all her family. I have known Gretta for many years, both through Zonta Club of Salt Lake and Wasatch Presbyterian Church. She was a good friend, dedicated Zontian and a wonderful, intelligent and gentle person in all ways. I will always remember her.
