My father was always a little mysterious to me, at first because I didn’t get to see him much, and also as he rarely revealed much of his past. At first when he was at medical school, I would have to stay up late to even see him, then he was off in rural Mexico paying back the cost of his education. This was followed by his training, and then his career. When he was able to spend time with my mother and I, we did short little outings such as picnics by the river, extremely unsuccessful fishing expeditions at Lake Erie, and the occaisional baseball game. Even with this, there wasn’t any doubt in my mind that he loved me deeply and without reservation.
I learned lasting lessons in kindness, respect for all regardless of circumstance, the value of honesty, and to work with stubborn persistence, while remaining true to yourself. I also picked up the plain stubborn part which exasperates everyone to this day.
He remained fiercely dedicated to his patients and his work, and although he was interested in literature, music, and gadgets, he really didn’t take much time to pursue them. I think most men would have become overly serious and lacking in humor, but Dad’s humor remained brilliantly intact his whole life, without sarcasm or malice toward anyone. Even in the depths of his illness, he would let it out as a bright, surprisingly relevant flash that would dispel the gloom for a little while.
Very few people can be said to have truly led by example, but to this day, I haven’t met anyone that did it better than Dad did.
