I got to know Gwen in the late 60’s in Flint, Michigan. Later, she and Joe Cunningham made a king sized quilt for me which of course we still have. Then when my grandchildren began to arrive, Gwen did a crib sized quilt for all twelve of them, each a one of a kind design with a star motif. She called them the “Visser Star Series”. They will be treasured possessions of our grandchildren for life.
I have so many fond memories of times spent with Gwen in Flint and later when we retired to Charlevoix and Gwen would spend the night with us on her to Italy and then London to visit Matt. We left Charlevoix six years ago and I have not seen her since. I only today learned that she died. It is a dad day, even this much later.

I just now learned of Gwen's passing, please accept my sympathy for your loss. The quilting world has lost a very talented and inspiring teacher . . . :'(

Gwen Marston was an internationally-recognized quilt instructor, artist and a wonderful person! When I attended my first "liberated" class in May 1997, that she taught at Quilters Unlimited, I was really nervous - I was a new quilter and followed patterns! It was a wonderful class! She was funny, very knowledgeable about quiltmaking, and taught us how to be freer with our quilting. It was such a great class that I wrote to her, telling her my story & pretty much begging to be included in her Beaver Island Quilt Retreat... She made room for me in "first week" that very September! Just the best time, and oh yeah, got some quilting done! I was always appreciative that she got me in the retreat - I hope I told her! I went to her retreat for several years, first on Beaver Island, then in Elk Rapids. Gwen lifted my spirits at a time when I needed it desperately. When she came back to Quilters Unlimited for a lecture and classes, she stayed at my house - we had the best time! Her first grandson, Grady, was born while she was at my house.... I had told her to wake me up if he arrived before morning - I think it was around 2 or 3 in the morning.. so of course we had to talk awhile about her grandson! Gwenny, you were a special lady and I'll always remember you! Paula Lelansky

Gwen was pure inspiration to her fellow quilters! Gwen once said that when she got stuck in her creative mode she would take a day and peruse through her quilt library of books and magazines till inspiration ignited once again. The moments when I peruse through my books, magazine, & fabric...I always hear Gwens voice echo in my quilting soul till that spark ignites. I feel blessed & lucky to have enjoyed her class at Empty Spools!

Gwen's first book, "Liberated Quilting," has been my inspiration for years. For me, she took the tedium out of quilting, and made it fun.
