H. Glenn Bell, Jr., MD Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 25, 2024.
Dr. Harry Glenn Bell, Jr. of Carmel-by-the-Sea, California passed away on January 25, 2024 at the age of 87. He was born on March 20, 1936 in San Francisco, California where he grew up in his family home in Ingleside Terraces. His boyhood room sported photos of his beloved dogs, an impressive record collection and a record player, a radio (to listen to his favorite programs), and many golf tournament trophies all with a view of his father's prized garden.

Glenn graduated from Lowell High School in 1954, Stanford University in 1958 and Columbia Medical School in 1962. After graduating from medical school, Glenn enlisted in the United States Army where he served as a doctor on the army base in Augsburg, Germany. He met the love of his life, Carol von Waaden, a school teacher from San Jose who was also working on the same base. Carol and Glenn got married on March 11, 1966 and started their adventures together from that very moment. Carol and Glenn then moved to Washington where Glenn earned his degree in radiology from the University of Washington.

Their journey took them back to their native California, where they raised their two daughters, Jennifer and Shannon in Los Gatos. Glenn worked as a Diagnostic Radiologist at Kaiser Permanente for almost 30 years. He was dedicated to the care of patients and his warmth and honesty earned him the respect and admiration of both patients and colleagues.

To list all the things that Glenn loved is no easy feat. He enjoyed cruising the world. While seeing some of the most beautiful places in the world, he made friends wherever he went. He loved to cook. He used to say that if he wasn't a doctor, he would've been a chef. His cooking brought friends and family together over dinner parties, summer barbecues, and amazing breakfasts which are all legendary. He loved Lake Tahoe. Spending time at the family cabin on the West Shore was extremely special to him. He would sit in his favorite chair and loved to read his books on his Kindle while enjoying the view. He enjoyed dogs, watching golf, singing, chocolate, Stanford football games, 'Judge Judy', traveling to Honfleur (France) and Mazatlan (Mexico), making new friends and memories, and his daily call with his dear sister. He loved watching Carol tend to her garden, his daughters grow up, and his grandchildren blossom into amazing adults. He loved his family deeply.

Glenn, a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, and brother, is survived by his wife of 58 years, Carol von Waaden Bell, daughter Jennifer Bell of San Jose, daughter Shannon (Eric) Lockman of Los Gatos, his two grandchildren Matthew Lockman and Abby Lockman, and his sister, Janet Bell of San Francisco. He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Dr. H. Glenn Bell and Carol Simmons Bell.

I met Glenn and Carol in Honfleur, in the restaurant where I made Glenn try a very good Calvados !
We met every time they would come black and driving around in the Norman countryside was a real pleasure . We offered the three of us great memories, went to the pottery in Bavent to chose a dove for the roof, discovered charming little restaurants in small villages like Cambremer ... I could have driven hundreds of kilometers chatting and sharing so precious moments .
Glenn's great human qualities and compassion reflected on his marvellous smile and I keep it deep in my heart .
