H. Miller Pinkleton Sr.

Hugh Miller Pinkleton, Sr., 84, retired professional engineer and Director of Design for the Tennessee Department of Transportation, died Friday, April 4, 2008 at his residence in Barrow Court. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. at St. Peter's Episcopal Church with The Reverend Thomas Wilson officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery with military honors at graveside provided by Herbert Griffin American Legi0n Post #19. The family will visit with friends Tuesday from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Oakes & Nichols. Notes of sympathy may be sent to www.oakesandnichols.com. Born in Lynnville, he moved to Columbia in 1928 with his late parents, Clyde M. Pinkleton and Ella May Compton Pinkleton. He was a graduate of Central High School, attended the University of Tennessee and Middle Tennessee State University and graduated from Vanderbilt University. Mr. Pinkleton served in the Naval Air Corps during World War II aboard a carrier in the South Pacific. He was married September 14, 1946 to the former Loretta Orr of Columbia. Mrs. Pinkleton died January 11, 2002. Survivors include a daughter, Laurie Pinkleton of Columbia; a son, Hugh M. (Teresa) Pinkleton, Jr. of Chattanooga; granddaughter, Ashley Pinkleton and great-granddaughter, Shyia of Chattanooga; beloved pet, Bee Bee, II; special friends and neighbors, Sherrie and Wayne Kennedy; two nieces. He was preceded in death by a sister, Sarah Elrod and a brother, C. D. Pinkleton. Pallbearers are George Knox, Clifton Kelley, Wayne Kennedy, Richard Connors, Sam P. "Buddy" Sweeney, Jimmy Shrader, Monroe Lovell, Hillard Cross, Billy Carpenter, Tom Patton, Ed Harlan, Ray Pinkleton, and Bobby Compton. Honorary pallbearers include Bob Sweeney, Jack Weatherford, Glen Kinnard, Barrow Court neighbors, retirees of Tennessee Department of Transportation Highway Design Division, morning golfers at Stoneybrook Golf Club. The family expresses appreciation to Dr. Rand Hayes and his staff for their kindness and attention during his illness.
