H. Wayne Stevenson Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 26, 2024.
With sadness in our hearts, we announce the passing of Mr. H. Wayne Stevenson, aged 76, of Cary, NC, on March 17, 2024. Wayne was born on March 26, 1947, in Tattnall County, GA, and raised in Eastman, GA. He leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and cherished memories.

Wayne's professional life found its anchor as a Project Manager at Stroud and Company. However, his true passion lay in his community of Gray, GA, where he spent most of his adult life. A man of many talents, Wayne had a remarkable ability to play the piano by ear and could effortlessly master almost any musical instrument, save for the bagpipes, an instrument he humorously deemed untested due to lack of opportunity. His musical prowess was evident to all who knew him.

Beyond music, Wayne was known for his mechanical aptitude. He possessed the remarkable ability to repair nearly anything and poured his passion into building model airplanes, hot rods, and Harley Davidson Motorcycles. His craftsmanship was renowned throughout the town, particularly his meticulously crafted Hot Rods and Jaguars.

A founding member of the Dixie Aeromasters, Wayne played a pivotal role in establishing a model plane airfield in Gray. His dedication to the club and the community left an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Wayne is survived by his beloved wife, Bonnie Harrell Stevenson, a retired history teacher from Jones County High School; his son and daughter-in-law, Jake and Laura Stevenson; his daughter and son-in-law, Erin Stevenson-Bennett and David Bennett; grandchildren Jack, Luke, Levi, and Carson; and sister, Stacey Stevenson Harrell. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lucy and Homer Stevenson, and his brother, Pat Stevenson.

A service to honor and celebrate Wayne's life will be held in the Chapel at Jordan Oaks Gracious Retirement Living, located at 10820 Penny Road, Cary, NC, on April 13 at 4:00 PM. May Wayne's memory continue to inspire and bring comfort to all who knew him.

Wayne was always good to me, we would talk family and at that time he was racing dirt bikes. We had many things in common. Sorry for the loss.

freshman year at Georgia Southern in 1965, I was lucky enough to meet my BFF, Bonnie Harrell and of course that meant I also met Wayne. Can´t think of one without the other - Bonnie&Wayne. So many wonderful memories Robert and I have of times spent with them. One weekend Wayne invited us to go water skiing so we excitedly got on the boat, Robert put on the skis and off we went with Wayne driving. He knew exactly where we were and what was coming up around the bend! Alligators! Yes! Alligators sliding into the river from both sides! Thought Robert was going to have a heart attack and there was Wayne laughing his head off!! Bonnie I were yelling and screaming about getting Robert in the boat before he got eaten! Don´t think we ever went back! But we did have so many, many going away parties for Robert before he left for the Navy. Some were in Gray, some were in Atlanta and some were in Underground with Wayne driving the VW Bus! That VW Bus took me and all my worldly possessions up to be with Robert in Bainbridge, Maryland. Bonnie&Wayne wanted us to be together so they made it happen! Not our best driving on that trip but we made it! We always did make the most of our weekends! Another time they made a trip to see us in Key West! Always there for us! We treasure our friendship and love you dearly. Wayne was smart, fun, funny and a genius musically and mechanically. We will miss him but will keep our memories of him in our hearts. Rest in Peace dear friend. And love you so much my BFF, Bonnie. Love, Sharon & Robert

Wayne and I would talk about dirt bikes. He had a great enthusiasm for them. He could be quite animated.

Some many memories. Bonnie was teaching me how to drive stick shift, I parked 9trillon feet from Miss Ellie, Erin ran into the house screaming I hit her, he had just finished the repairs from the secretary hitting the motorcycle. Oh the look when he flung open to door to giggling youngins. Oh the many times Erin played snake jokes, he is the best Uncle cousin a girl could have. Marigene Prevatt- Lingle
