I HAD TO GO AWAY

I had to go away.
I'm sorry you couldn't come with me.
But on earth is where you shall stay.
Please do not be sad.
Instead laugh and be glad.
I'm in a beautiful place, such a beautiful place.
I know you wont see me for a while.
But you will hear from me.
I will be the wind that will chill you on a hot summer day.
I will be the sun that will warm you when it's cold.
Listen to the birds sing, I will be saying, "I love you" in their song.
I know you can't touch me.
But you will feel me.
Because I will be inside of you giving you life on the days you feel like you can't go on anymore.
Please I beg of you, go on, live your life as I lived mine.
Always remember we will be together again.
I will be patiently waiting for you on that day.
When you will join me in this beautiful place.
Until then may God bless you with his almighty grace.

It was my great pleasure and honor to assist Theodosia and Hank Jones during his appearance at the Savannah Music Festival in 2003. At the end of his performance he was worried that he "had left something onstage," an old music hall saying that points up a musician's disappointment in his performance. Even in his eighties, he seemed to be a man who gave it his all and settled for nothing less. He is already missed...and we shall not see the likes of him again.

Great to know that Henry Jones Sr and Olivia Jones raised their children in Pontiac Michigan and they became some of the greatest Jazz Musicians the world has ever known. They also raised some of the finest people to ever walk the face of the earth. Talk about equanimity under duress!!! Elvin Jones (Drums), Thaddeus Jones (Trumpet) and Henry "Hank" Jones Jr were three of the best Jazz musicians in the world and they all grew up in Pontiac Michigan in the same house at 179 Lake Street!!! I thank God for Hank Jones and the wonderful legacy that he left behind.

I am glad he was here with us. He enriched the musical world with his artistry. He was wise enough to HEAR the other greats and benefit from their contributions. We all, musicians, and non-musicians alike, are better for his existence. And, I'm glad we have remaining evidence of his musicianship. Considering his brothers, Thad, trumpet and the inimitable Elvin, the drummer, perhaps there is a gene for music ability.

My deepest condolences to Teddy and the family. My husband, Murray Kagel, was one of Hank's fans and friends through his career. Murray whom Hank in his characteristic warmth and generosity would introduce as his "attorney" spent many hours at Bradley's listening and talking to Hank. I can imagine that Hank's devoted fan, Murray who died in 2008, is welcoming him to jazz heaven.
May the joyous, creative life he lived, give you comfort in your grief.

Our radio station in Chicago (WBEE) played mainstream straight-ahead jazz music for over 35 years, and Hank Jones' melodic notes and beautiful phrasing could always be heard. "Opus de Funk," featuring Hank Jones on piano, Milt Jackson on vibes, and Frank Wess on flute, demonstrated clearly how this music should be played and why jazz will live forever (as long as supremely gifted musicians continue to keep it in their hearts and minds).

I would like to offer the Jones family my deepest and sincerest condolences. The world has lost a great piano player and giant in the world of Jazz. They don't come to much better then Mr. Hank Jones, he'll truly be missed by Jazz ethusiast. I would like to share this thought at Job 14:14,15 "If an able-bodied man dies can he live again ? All the days of my compulsory service I (Mr. Hank Jones) shall wait, Until my relief comes. You will call, and I myself shall answer you. For the work of your hands you will have a yearning." Mr. Jones, will not be forgotten by the family, friends, Jazz enthusiast, nor by the 'Creator of life.'
