Harold Frank Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Apr. 13 to Apr. 23, 2023.
Harold "Hal" Frank, a popular Orange County teacher and referee, passed peacefully at his home on March 8, 2023. He was 86.

Hal was born December 10, 1936, in Knox County, Ohio to Walter and Rosella Frank, and was the youngest of 12 children. He was passionate about sports from an early age, excelling at both basketball and football. He also felt the calling to be an educator. After graduating from Capital University with a degree in education, he travelled the world teaching as well as coaching youth sports. It was in Turkey that he met Carolyn Arruda, another teacher, who would later become his wife. They had two children and settled in Mission Viejo, CA.

As his career as a teacher progressed, Hal went back to school and earned his Master's of Education from USC. While teaching history at Tustin Unified School District, Hal became even more involved in local sports. He refereed basketball, baseball, softball, soccer and volleyball at the JC, High School and youth levels. If you played youth sports in Orange County in the 1980's, 90's and even 2000's, there was a good chance you would recognize him out on the court or field: tall, thin, perhaps a little short of hair, but always quick with a joke. And above all, fair. In short - a darn fine ref.

He prided himself on his fitness and his ability to keep overzealous players and fans in check. He was active until the end. On the last day of his life, he refereed a youth soccer game before returning home and passing quietly in his sleep.

He is survived by 2 brothers, Myron and Wayne; his children, Lynne and Deron, and their families including 4 loving grandchildren Kai, Kalea, Noa Duke and Alana Frank.

A small family service will be held in Manhattan Beach, CA on May 13th.

Hal will be deeply missed by all who knew him. His intelligence, curiosity, and sense of humor will be remembered always.

Dear family,
Hal was a dear friend of my late husband Tom Hughes. For YEARS, they shared breakfasts together @ Burger Town. Hal would often come over later and pick oranges, lemons, tangerines, avocados--always excited to be going to Manhattan Beach to see his son and the family. And how proud he was of all of you!! I helped him with his email and referee notifications, as you'll recall that his skill with technology was minimal. We loved visiting with Hal, I know that I will miss him.My sincere condolences, he was a great guy.

Hal always told me how glad he was to see me at meetings or officiate a game with me. He had no enemies and was a true friend to all!
