Harold Sauerwein Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 18, 2025.
Harold Clayton "Jay" Sauerwein, 85, passed away on January 1, 2025, in Cape Canaveral, Florida. Born on July 8, 1939, in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, Jay lived a life marked by service to his country, devotion to his family, and a deep love for faith and community.

At the age of 17, Jay made the courageous decision to leave high school and enlist in the United States Navy. His commitment to education never waned; he continued his studies during his military service and after retiring from active duty. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Business from the University of Central Florida and later completed a master's degree in management of technology from the University of Miami.

During his distinguished naval career, Jay served as an Admiral's Writer for Admiral John Sidney McCain-father of Senator John McCain-during the Vietnam War. Stationed with CINCPAC in Hawaii, he played a vital role in supporting high-level operations during a pivotal time in American history.

Following his retirement from the Navy, Jay embarked on a second career that would span decades within the aerospace industry. He contributed significantly to NASA's Shuttle Program through various roles with aerospace contractors. His leadership and expertise led him to rise through the ranks and serve as vice president for several prominent firms supporting space exploration.

Jay was deeply devoted to his wife of 47 years, Nancy (Heath) Sauerwein. Together they built a life grounded in mutual respect and shared values. He was a proud father to three sons: Jeff (wife Lisa) of Bandon, Oregon; Chris (wife April) of Charlotte, North Carolina; and Anthony (wife Lisa) of Hillsborough, Oregon. He also leaves behind his brother James Sauerwein (wife Dolores) of Bethlehem; sister Janice Malozi (husband Richard) of Allentown; many nieces and nephews; along with three foreign exchange students; Toru Motosu (Isesaki Japan); Jason Christian-Widt (Taihape, New Zealand); and Stefanie Toeppel (Hamburg Germany); and four cherished surrogate Texas daughters-Shareen, and Shannon, Jennifer, and Yvonne-affectionately known as "Jay's Angels."

Jay found joy in many pursuits outside of work. He was an avid golfer and boater who also enjoyed birding and football. As a devoted Fourth Degree member of the Knights of Columbus and an enthusiastic supporter of the University of Miami Hurricanes, he embraced camaraderie and tradition with equal passion. Among his favorite treats were kiffles-a nod to his Pennsylvania Dutch roots.

Above all else, Jay was known for his unwavering love of God, country, his wife Nancy, their family, and friends. His legacy is one of integrity, dedication, and heartfelt connection with those around him.

A Requiem Mass will be held in Jay's honor on May 5, 2025, at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church located at 210 E. Northampton St., Bath, Pennsylvania 18014. The service will begin at 10:30 AM and conclude at 11:30 AM. An Honor Guard will be provided by the Knights of Columbus.

May Harold Clayton "Jay" Sauerwein's memory be a blessing to all who knew him and loved him.

Oh the awesome memories I have of working with Jay at Kennedy Space Center and also being his `study buddy´ during our joint pursuit of a masters degree at University of Miami. He sure loved being a `cane´. I even remember my very first encounter with Jay at a Cocoa Beach law firm. He was one of a kind who left me with many cherished memories!
