Harold Schaberg Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Apr. 28 to Apr. 30, 2016.
Harold E. Schaberg, age 81, of Edwardsville, Illinois died at 10:25 a.m. Wednesday, April 27, 2016, at Meridian Village Care Center.
He was born August 10, 1934, in Edwardsville, the son of the late Edward & Edna (Koenig) Schaberg.
Harold was baptized and confirmed at Eden Church in Edwardsville. He was a graduate of Edwardsville High School.
Harold married Carol Porter on December 14, 1963, at Eden Church. She preceded him in death on May 25, 2006.
He is survived by a daughter, Susan H. Schaberg, M.D. of St. Louis; two sons, Mark E. Schaberg and Michael A. Schaberg, both of East Alton; and a sister, Elinor Thiems of Edwardsville.
He was preceded in death by 2 sisters, Ruth Christianson and Helen Meyer. After two years in the Army and a tour of Germany, he joined Shell Oil Company retiring in 1991 with 29 years of service as an asbestos insulator and foreman. He held office in Asbestos Local #56 in Wood River and was a member of the Madison County Farm Bureau. As a skilled carpenter, he built all three of his family's homes, the first in Carpenter, and the following two in Kendall Hill. He enjoyed dancing, Cardinal baseball (admiring Bob Gibson), summer road trip vacations throughout the U.S. with Carol, kids, grandmother, and great aunt piled in the station wagon, riding his bike throughout Kendall Hill, and barbequing on summer nights.
He loved gardening, especially tomatoes (that neighbors were happy to sample from his roadside garden), his dogs and cats, chocolate (particularly Oreo and Chips Ahoy cookies), and keeping busy outside. He was not one to sit inside. He enjoyed visiting neighbors, especially the Spanos and Serfases. He was also grateful for his friendship with Joyce Koenig and her family He was happy to help his children with house repairs and construction projects. He did not mind (too much) moving Susan to various cities throughout the U.S. He was happy to help anyone any way he could. He will be missed terribly.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, April 29, 2016, at Weber & Rodney Funeral Home.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Weber & Rodney Funeral Home with Rev. John Roberts officiating.
Interment will be at St. James Cemetery.
The family requests memorials to Partners for Pets Rescue in Troy, Illinois.
