HAROLD SHIPP Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Sep. 11 to Sep. 13, 2014.
HAROLD GORDON SHIPP Passed away peacefully at Trillium Health Partners, Mississauga Hospital on Sunday, September 7, 2014 at the age of 88 years. Beloved husband to Margaret Shipp and the late June (Ingram) Shipp (2001). Loving father of Victoria H. Shipp and her husband Gary F. Colter, Catharine M. Shipp Wells and Gordon H. Shipp and his wife Deborah. Gramps to Darrell (Stacy Hill), Carolynne, Katelyn, Lauren, Meredith (Alexander Eaton), Corey, Harrison, Gavin, Paul and the late Carson. Great-Gramps of Reagan and Carter. Father-in-law of Bruce G. Wells. He will also be fondly remembered as Pops by his step-daughters Nina Chadraba, Maggie Ribeiro and her children Roberto, Rico; Scarlett Strati, her husband Frank and their children Vienna and Leila. He was a devoted, caring and loving family man as Captain of the "Shipp" fleet. It is hard to believe that anyone did more in 88 years, as he lived life to the fullest. Harold was a remarkable and unique person who brought happiness and positive feelings to many in all walks of life. After assuming the leadership of Shipp Corporation from his late father Gordon in 1968, Harold built a remarkable Mississauga-based family real estate business. The name "Shipp Built" has always been synonymous with the highest levels of trust, integrity and quality since 1923. Harold was a longtime General Motors dealer, operating the Applewood dealership for many years. His favourite car was a Cadillac, always pursuing the latest model, usually in the colour red. His marketing expertise was highlighted at one point by placing three cars on the top of Shipp model homes. For many years, Harold was a leading standardbred horse breeder and owner and served as a trustee of the Ontario Jockey Club. He experienced great joy in raising and racing horses at the highest level of competition. Harold's love of travel was without compare. He spent countless hours planning his next trip and recounting endless stories about his global adventures. Few, if any, could mention a place that Harold had not visited. Always dressed immaculately and appropriately, he was a champion of leading fashion and bright colours. Harold was a person of extreme generosity who contributed significantly to Trillium Health Partners and many other charitable causes. He provided leadership on many Trillium Health Partners fundraising campaigns, including one which supported the building of the Harold G. and June C. Shipp Stroke Centre. Harold was a Past President and Life Director of the Canadian Home Builders Association and the Toronto Home Builders Association. He was a Life Director of the U.S. National Association of Home Builders. He was a Trustee and Life Council Member of the U.S. Urban Land Institute and continued to attend all their annual conferences until last year. He was a Past President of the Mississauga Board of Trade, Kingsway Kiwanis Club, former Campaign Chairman of the United Way - Peel Region and Honorary Chair of Trillium Health Partners Foundation. Harold was Grand Prior of the Sovereign Order of St. John of Jerusalem Knights of Malta. He was a member of the Mississaugua Golf and Country Club and Granite Club for many years. Friends will be received at the Turner & Porter "Peel Chapel", 2180 Hurontario St., Mississauga (one block north of QEW), on Sunday, September 14, 2014 from 1-4 and 6-9 p.m. Funeral Service will be held on Monday, September 15, 2014 at 11 o'clock at Islington United Church, 25 Burnhamthorpe Rd., Etobicoke. Interment Springcreek Cemetery, Clarkson. As an expression of sympathy, the family would appreciate any remembrances be made to Trillium Health Partners Foundation.

My sincere condolences to the family of Harold Shipp. I was out of the country when Harold passed away and regret not being able to attend his funeral. Harold was a valued long-time former client and I will miss his wit, humour and joie de vivre. Sincerely, Catherine Roberts

Harold G. Shipp,
“The majority of us lead quiet, unheralded lives as we pass through this world. There will most likely be no ticker-tape parades for us, no monuments created in our honor. But that does not lessen our possible impact, for there are scores of people waiting for someone just like us to come along; people who will appreciate our compassion, our unique talents. Someone who will live a happier life merely because we took the time to share what we had to give. Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have a potential to turn a life around. It's overwhelming to consider the continuous opportunities there are to make our love felt.” ? Leo Buscaglia......... Time has no meaning in itself unless we choose to give it meaning. It has been one of the most interesting and unusual twenty-one years.
Thank you. Angela

Seager Family

September 12, 2014

On behalf of the Seager family, we send our condolences on the passing of Harold. He was well-known to our family, going back to when he and our mom (Marcia Joyce, now deceased) were high school sweethearts. He was kind and generous in always remembering our mother's leap year birthday. May he rest in peace and may all the extended Shipp family members take comfort in the legacy of community service left by your husband, father and grandfather and great- grandfather.

Harold ws a great great man i must say.Always smiling and had so many great stories to tell he will be missed

Vicky - I am sure you do not remember me but your family has always been a great memory of mine. We went to school together at Riverside and you invited me to your birthday party. My Mom and Dad met at the Mississauga Golf and Country Club and we used to watch your Mom and Dad arrive at the First United Church in Port Credit in the Caddy (top usually down). Your Mom's hats were the always the envy of my Mom who created many "knock offs". My first house in 1977 was a Shipp in Applewood. Just wanted you to know the impact of your family on me growing up. Your Dad was one of a kind and Mississauga will surely miss him. Thanks to him for all he did and may be rest in peace.
