Harold Stern Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 1, 2024.
Harold Stern age 88

Born March 18, 1936. Passed away comfortably at home, in his favorite chair, surrounded by family on March 30, 2024.

Harold was a family man, an accomplished attorney-at-law, and a distinguished member of the Michigan Bar Association since 1963. He built his own practice of loyal clients who continued calling for his services until his final days.

He was a voracious reader, car enthusiast, cigar aficionado, and loved classical music along with his Detroit sports teams.

He played tennis for over 50 years - usually doubles - at least twice a week into his early 70s. To keep active later in life he dutifully took the family dog, Pudge, for walks around the Huntington Woods neighborhood he lived in for 61 years.

He also loved traveling with his family to their vacation homes in Florida and Northern Michigan.

After a hand injury he suffered while skiing in the 1970s, Harold used needlepoint as part of his rehabilitation process. He became an accomplished needlepoint artist creating hundreds of designs. Some were made into pillows, others became framed pictures, and many more remain in various phases of completion. He spent countless hours working on difficult designs without the use of a manual or guide. These complex works typically require the application of mathematical formulas, yet he was able to complete his needlepoints perfectly without them. He turned a hand rehabilitation into an art form that will survive him forever. He did all this while watching the Tigers, smoking cigars and enjoying his favorite snacks. He was a brilliant man that enjoyed the simple things.

Harold was incredibly intelligent, funny, and patient. His quiet, stoic nature, coupled with an intense inner strength, led his family through many difficult times. Life threw him obstacle after obstacle, and he never wavered. He will be greatly missed by his family.

Harold is survived by the love of his life, Claire. The two were married for 65 years. Claire took care of him for the entirety of their relationship and did everything in her power to keep him happy and healthy right up to his passing.

Harold is survived by his sons/grandsons Peter, Max, and Tyler.

Harold was preceded in death by his daughter Florence Gabrielle, brothers Edward and Kenneth, and his parents Jack and Florence.

Private services will be held at the family home in the coming days.

My visits each Summer with Harold and Claire growing up were some of the most special times of my life! I can never express the gratitude and love I feel for Harold and Family. May his memory always be a blessing. Rest in Peace

Favorite memory of my witty uncle? When I disemabarked from my first ever plane ride, visiting him in Detroit, and told him that the stewardess (yes) had brought me club soda and lemon to ease my upset stomach. "Add a shot of whiskey and you´ll feel even better!" What a talented, brilliant, fierce and stoic man. In our thoughts always, his memory always a blessing. Lizzy
