Harriet Smyth Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Apr. 16 to Apr. 18, 2009.
SMYTH , (Etta) Harriet Margaret April 28, 1934 - April 13, 2009 Etta, beloved wife of Tommy Smyth, passed away on Monday, April 13, 2009 at the age of 74 years. Etta was born Harriet Margaret Noon to Bessie Rae and James Noon. She grew up in Maryhill, Glasgow as the youngest of two, with Joyce Howell being the eldest. As a child she spent part of the war as an evacuee in the countryside while Glasgow was the victim of bombing raids. Rationing was an everyday aspect of life then and as a result, in later years she was never without a "stash" of sweeties. Whenever we hear "sweetie papers" rustling we always think of her. She met her future husband Tommy Smyth "at the dancin", Greens Playhouse to be exact, and it was not long before they were an item. They married in 1955 and had Linda, Laura, Valerie and Shaun. She said on her deathbed that she was eternally proud of her children. The family emigrated from Scotland to Canada in 1969 and she made many new friends in Calgary. Etta and Tommy travelled extensively but she wanted to say that her homeland was always her favourite place to visit. One of her greatest joys in life was to follow her son's acting career and both she and Tommy travelled across the country to see each new play. Etta worked for the Calgary Catholic School Board at Bishop Carroll and at the central office. She was proud to be employed there and had fond memories of her workmates and her work. She wanted everyone to know, if they did not already, that she liked a good laugh and that she never saw a bargain that she could resist. Etta was great fun, an avid reader, a great singer and patron of the theatre. She enjoyed being involved in the lives of her nine grandchildren and was thrilled about the latest addition, her great-granddaughter born just a week before her death. She wanted her sons-in-law to know that she valued their friendship. We will all miss her terribly but we are happy that her suffering has ended. ...'and yet they who are long gone are in us, As predisposition, as burden upon our destiny, as blood that pulsates And as gesture that rises up out of the depth of time... Funeral Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY'S Park Memorial Chapel (5008 Elbow Drive S.W.) today, April 18, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. Finally she asked us to thank all her caregivers over the past few years at the Foothills and Rockyview Hospitals with special thanks to Dr. Tam and all her nurses on Unit 57 at the Rocky who made her last days peaceful and free of worry. Her entire family wishes to echo these last thoughts and thank the wonderful team at the Rocky for all of their charity towards Etta and the hope that they gave her. Thanks also to Father Dowling for his visits to her in her last days. Her doctor for these last two years was Dr. Geoghegan who worked so hard to keep her well. We appreciate everything that he did for her. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com . In living memory of Etta Smyth, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Park Memorial Chapel, 5008 ELBOW DRIVE S.W. Telephone: 403-243-8200.

I just found this website today. Not sure how I didn't know it existed but it was sure nice to be able to read all the lovely things you all said about me Granny.

Almost a year has passed since her death and it still feels like yesterday I said good bye that day at the hospital. I whispered in her ear: 'I may not see you here again but I will always see you in my dreams'. She must have heard me because she has visited me from time to time in my dreams and each time is a gift. What I wouldn't give to lay my head on her shoulder one last time or hear that laugh!

Sometimes I see strange little traits about her pop up in my daughter. They also both have almost the same color eyes, that is such an amazing thing to be able to look at everyday.

I miss her so very much, a formidable force she was and now we all seem a little lost without her at times. Not having her around is so odd to me. I spoke to her almost everyday of my life, sometimes twice or I would spend my whole weekend up at the montgomery house with them when any normal teenager would have been out with friends. I am so thankful I chose to be close to her, let her into my life, take her guidance and really listen to what she had to say. Her influence has helped shape me and keep me honest and real about who I am and what I am here for.

I miss her presence, her force, her sympathy, her guidance and sometimes I even miss her cooking! No one could make mince n totee's the way she could.

I miss you so much Granny, I wish we could start all over again, right from the beginning and I wouldn't change a thing! Thanks for all the laughs, teaching me the importance of a good cry and showing me the need, no the responsibility of watching great films!

I miss you just as much as on April 13th, when you had to go.

See you in my dreams...

Dearest Tommy, Linda, Laura, Valerie, Sean and families,

We are so saddened to hear that Aunt Etta has passed away Yet we should be grateful that her suffering is over. She was an indomitable force of nature, that brought so many joys to the world, especially her family and friends. I wish I had been lucky enough to spend more time with her, but I know my mom, her sister, Joyce, is cut from the same cloth, and for that reason I never felt far from Etta. In fact, for the few hours I spent with our gran, Bessie, "Nana Noon", and your dear Etta, I felt they were always a living presence in my life-- bigger than life, and the definition of Spirit, Determination, Generosity, Fun, and Humanity. I am so proud to think we share the same clan history and blood. I will always look to the Noon women as my primary source of inspiration, in what a person can do with their life, and what quality of life a person can impart to their own ones, by personal example. Etta is a beautiful and brilliant spirit and will be in our hearts and lives ALWAYS.

God be with you, dear family, today as you say farewell and in all the days to come, may you be comforted as you remember how much Etta loved life and all of us.
Your loving cousin, Heather Rae and family.

Love and prayers to Tom and Etta's wonderful family, a remarkable clan. With you in spirit,

Aunt Joyce Rae Noon Howell, and family, Ken, Heather, Laurie, and James and families.

Speech for funeral as written and read by Aidan Millan-Smyth (12)

As I grew up my granny taught me many lessons, skills and abilities that could help me now and later on in my life. For example, like being able to love upon anger and always being able to respect people for who they are. She taught me lots of skills many I use now, she taught me how to read, write, pronunciate, and pay attention to detail. I have had lots of memories with my granny, at the old house, she would send me downstairs so I could get her more sweeties (candy) for her and me to share. I would always be scared to go downstairs where it was dark and have to climb over the mountains beyond mountains of “Keep Sakes”. Whenever I hear the rustle of candy wrappers I will always remember her popping one in her mouth every 5 minutes. She was a great Granny but even a better friend. I do have to say that granny was a “war horse” fighting through every gruesome battle, whether it be trying to peel open the pesky oranges or saying goodbye to her family one last time.

Thank you ...

Aidan Ramon

Written and Read at the Funeral
by Molly Millan-Smyth (18)

Etta, more commonly known as Granny is the most influential person in my life. From being able to control and justify any dilemma to crying at the sight of an untied shoelace, she taught me more than any other human would be able to. Her countless accessories were merely a reflection of her dynamic personality, she was stern but fair, fearless but loving and honest but comical. One thing she would refuse is not to make light of any situation, though she was the centre of her own universe, constantly meddling in everyone's business she was the glue that held our clan together. An answered phone call, three voicemails and two messages waiting at home telling you to call granny per day... simply the usual. Granny, you'll be missed though not forgotten and we'll carry on to hold our spirits high and take pride in what you've passed on to us. As you asked, you'll always be remembered as a photograph, not a negative.

Dear Tommy and family,
I had the incredible privilege of working with Etta at the Calgary Catholic School District, many years ago. We would tease Etta that she was the only one who knew where every student's record was filed. Etta was an amazingly organized woman. Whenever an employee stopped by Etta's desk, she would get us laughing with her many stories. She was deeply missed when Etta decided to retire from the District. My deepest sympathy for your great loss.

Tommy, Shaun, Laura, Val, Linda,

We are so saddened to hear of Etta's death. She was loved as she built into the lives of our children over the years of the Ogden Legion Pipe Band - always there to offer a word of encouragement with the ever-present twinkle in her eye and great laugh. She will be sorely missed by all. We wish we could be in Calgary with you today but our thoughts and prayers are with you instead.

Tommy, Linda, Laura, Val, Shaun and the rest of the family.

We are all sharing a great sadness in Etta's death although at least now she is free from any suffering.

She was so kind to us throughout our lives and as her godson always made me feel special. She was always good for a laugh and it was easy to stay in her good books...as long as you helped keep her secret sweetie stash stocked up! It kinda worked on a points system, with Strathaven toffee scoring the most. Of course you had to make sure Laura didn't catch you making the handover.

I'm glad we saw much more of her in recent times as people became more able to travel and we enjoyed the times we spent together in Canada and her trips with Tommy to Scotland and Ireland. Was it the hills and glens that she came to see ... or was it the ice cream in Jaconelli's in Maryhill Road?

We'll all miss her. Sorry we can't be with you all.

Take care.

Love
