This is going to be long. I tried to edit it down but there was no way to digest the effect Harry Connick had on my life, so here goes.

I hired on as an assistant district attorney in 1986 - because I was an English major with a law degree and a history in theater, and with no specific ambition why not get a job at the office with the most trials in the country aside from DC?

I´ll never forget my starting salary: $18, 951. Per year.

After a few months in support divisions I found myself assigned to trials. Almost as soon as I got there my glasses broke. In those days, eyes were not covered by most insurance policies, and the DA´s office was no exception. Within a few weeks - when I realized I couldn´t see the jurors I was trying to select for trials - I knew this was a problem, and one I couldn´t resolve given my meager salary. At the end of one long day, I marched to the 4th floor and demanded to see Mr. Connick. Zully - Mr. Connick´s longtime fierce defender - asked if I´d exhausted the protocol: had I complained to my immediate supervisor, his supervisor, the first assistant? NO, I said, this is between me and Mr. Connick. I bet he doesn´t even know who I am. I left, defeated.

The next day, Mr. Connick appeared at my cubicle and asked if I´d lend him my broken glasses. He said he wanted to use them at a city council hearing at which he intended to request more money for the office. A few days after that, I found my glasses on my desk with a note from Mr. Connick: "Your glasses were Exhibit A at the city council hearing."

I don´t remember if we got more money out of that hearing, and of course that in itself is a great story, but it wasn´t the end. A few days later, Zully told me she´d made an appointment for me with Harry´s longtime friend and personal eye doctor Dr. Dabazies. He checked me out for free and wrote me a prescription for a discounted pair of glasses, so I could finally see the jury venire.

Decades later, I can report I have had a stellar career as a criminal litigator, to which I 100% owe Harry Connick. I will never forget the impact he had on my life. He was a prince of a man.

RIP and I´ll love you forever Mr. Connick.
