Harry Hall Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 12, 2021.
Harry Richard Hall (also known as Heru) passed away unexpectedly on March 12, 2021 in Montara, CA at the age of 64. Harry is survived by his wife, Barbara and children, Malea (25) of San Mateo, Mikeala (25) of Santa Monica, and Jalen (22) of San Mateo. He is also survived by his sisters, Jennifer Jackson, Louise Hall, and Valerie Ayoob, and brother, Mark Hall, and many relatives in the Bay Area, Alabama, and Atlanta. He is also survived by his nieces and nephews, Steven White, Karry White, Richard White, and Horace (Munchie)White, Zachary Lewis, Mandan Morris, Patricia Will, George Ayoob, and Amanda Ayoob. He is preceded in death by his sisters, Pamela Hall and Cheryl Harville-Hall, and parents, Gertrude Sullivan Hall and George Dunbar Hall. He touched many lives and inspired many, as a musician, audio engineer, volunteer coordinator and in his landscaping, gardening and floristry work. Harry was born in Redwood City, CA and graduated from Cubberley High School in Palo Alto in 1975. He earned an A.A. with honors from the College of San Mateo in Radio Broadcasting. As a young man he traveled a lot, starting at age eighteen, with trips to Mexico, Brazil, and two trips to Cuba, with stops around other countries like Colombia, Guatemala, Peru and the Philippines. He moved to Maui, Hawaii on a one-way ticket and lived there for seven years. Once returning to California, he worked briefly for a local newspaper in Visalia before returning to the Bay Area. In 1995, Harry met Barbara at a community television production. Early on, they traveled to Mexico, Belize and Guatemala, and made many trips to upstate New York. They had twin daughters, Malea and Mikeala, and son, Jalen. Harry worked in commercial radio production at KGO, KSFO and KMKY, and for 15 years at KCSM, Jazz 91 as an on-air host (1998-2013). He was Production Coordinator for Learning Ally for 12 years, until 2017, and before that with College Track. In the last few years of his life, Harry has worked on audio, gardening, and landscaping projects. He volunteered with Second Harvest, delivering food to families in need. In 2014 he produced a one-man play, Blues for Charles, which was performed at the San Francisco and Austin, TX Fringe Festivals. He was a man of prayer as a Nichiren Buddhist for the last 15 years. He was a very proud father, when Malea graduated from Syracuse University, Mikeala from UC Davis, and Jalen, who's getting ready to graduate from San Jose State University. We will miss his fun loving, inquisitive and passionate nature, especially about music, politics and sports. He loved to learn, was avid about news and liked a lively discussion. He played guitar almost every day, writing original songs, and was in several bands throughout his life. He played several times in the band for the UN Association International Film Festival at Stanford. He and Barbara loved to go to Stanford Men's Basketball games, walk, hike and go to jazz shows and festivals. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, March 21. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages a tribute gift to the Homeless Prenatal Program in San Francisco, or the International Rescue Committee (IRC).

Dear Barbara and Hall family, I recently found out that Harry passed. Please accept my deepest condolences. Though I didn't see him frequently, whenever I was in his presence he made the world a better place. I felt blessed when our paths crossed and that I got to know him. A great human being, wonderful person.

I'm sad to just learn of Harry's passing. Harry was one of my best friends at Cubberley High. He's one day younger than I am. Glad I got to see him at our Cubberley 40th graduation party, where he was the special guest DJ. Rest in peace, my friend.

My condolences to Harry’s family. I knew him from junior and senior h.s. and lived in the area close to his home, his brother Mark was also a friend. We hung out a lot through the teen age years which were tumultuous and Harry seemed pulled in many directions as we all did. He always seemed at the basic level to be kind and seeking some sort of higher path. One thing that was different about Harry was he was not ashamed to let you know he didn’t have it figured out, if you do please let me know, and that showed humility. I noticed in these many photos of his family a peaceful expression on his face and a calm presence. I’m sure you four were his joy and I wish you all well. Rick Revis, Cubberley 75

Harry was a beautiful and genuine soul. He was so wise, always full of joy, always singing, dancing, laughing and smiling. He had a gift for helping people who were hurting and lending them an ear and a couple of encouraging and supportive words from the heart. A true gem of a human being, those who Harry has touched are truly blessed to have had a friend like him. I’m thankful to have met you, I will miss you, your stories, your wisdom, your light and laughter.
Thank you for everything. May you rest in peace my beautiful, wise and talented friend. My sincerest condolences to the family, my thoughts and prayers are with you.

I first met Heru when I called in to one of his on air shows on KCSM FM 91.1 several years ago, to rave about his musical choices and his amazing voice. From that time on we were friends in music and in life. I feel him now, look forward to our next conversation. Much love and peace always to Barbara, Malea, Mikeala and Jalen. He is still with us, ony in a different way.

I was shocked to hear that Harry - or "Heru" as I called him - had crossed over to the other side. He was such a joyful, loving person who never hesitated to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. He met life with enthusiasm, loved his family, cherished his kids and was always smiling and fun to be around. We worked together at radio station KCSM. He leaves a positive breath of life with us all. We will miss him. Blessings to the family.

My heartfelt condolence to Barbara, Malea, Mikeala, and Jalen. My life has been undoubtedly enriched having known Harry. I was inspired by his wonderful talents, but most of all deeply impacted by his great passion. I will miss Harry, but he will live on in my memory for all my life.

I was very sad to learn of Heru's death. I first met Heru in 1982 or 83 while visiting my sister,
Marguerite, in Maui. Back then, we called him Rueben, and then Harry. I will always remember
his warmth and love of life. Since I never lived in the same part of the country as Hru, I only
saw him occasionally. Even though our visits have been few, I will always remember him as a
dear friend. I will remember his generous spirit, kindness and positivity. He will always hold a
special place in my heart. I send loving thoughts to Barbara, Malea, Mikeala, Jalen and all of
Heru's family. May your memories provide comfort.

Our deepest condolences to Barbara, Malea, Mikeala and Jalen. The news of his passing came as a great shock and surprise to us. Harry has always been so full of life, joy and exuberance and his laughter is contagious. Our regret is that we haven't had a chance to catch up for awhile. He's so talented and passionate about life and his music and I hope his legacy lives on in his children. This has made us realise how short life can be and will be a reminder to reach out to others before it's too late. Rest In Peace, Harry Hall, you'll always be remembered.

Heru was such a kind, positive, musical mentor to me, and I always think of him when I play the songs that he wrote. I can't believe he's gone. It is such a loss.

My heart goes out to Barbara, Malea, Mikeala, Jalen and all of his family and friends. His great spirit and compassionate heart are irreplaceable and he will be missed so much by all of us.

May his passing help us all redouble our efforts in the fight for justice and care for the earth.

A very special man. His laugh, his smile, his energy, will never leave my heart. From getting schooled by Harry in elementary school basketball, through Wilbur, Cubberley and our adventures on Maui I will treasure all my memories of the one and only Harr

Sending Condolences to Harry's Family. Harry was the kindest of people. We met in High School, and crossed paths many times in interesting venues, Bay Area Action, Music Festivals, Art Fairs etc. Harry always had time to stop and talk, his infectious smile and wonderful presence always brought calm, smiles and connectivity. Our friendship growing up encouraged me to be a better, happier young gal - which needed it, and hence a stronger person today. Harry somehow showed me through our friendship how important it is to continue with grace the thoughtful and difficult conversations, and that laughter and music heals most heavy hearts. Harry was delightfully insightful and encouraging to be ourselves with confidence and a smile. Forever grateful to have been his friend growing up. I wish to extend my deepest sympthathies to his family and dear friends for their huge loss. The angels I love, no doubt are welcoming him with open arms and gratitude.

I count myself fortunate to have come to know Heru through his longtime friends,my son Dennis and Michelle Spain Allen. Normally we would have a get-together during holidays when I was in the Bay Area. Heru was remarkable for his open-heartedness and his humor; he was a magnetic presence. He will be greatly missed. My heartfelt condolences to Barbara, Malea, Mikeala and Jalen, as well as his siblings and other relatives for whom he cared.

Harry and I saw each other a lot in high school. Our school lockers were next to each other. He was warm and outgoing. We were on the varsity tennis team together when we decided to stand up for team mates that had been excluded from a tennis match because of what we viewed as a racially motivated decision. I am proud to have known him and please accept my heartfelt condolences.
