Harry Mulder Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 18, 2011.
Harry A. Mulder PENNINGTON - Harry A. Mulder passed away peacefully at Capital Health Medical Center in Hopewell, on Dec. 12, 2011, surrounded by his loving wife of 63 years, Martha, and his children and their wives. The son of Harry A. Mulder Sr., and Bernice Hodgson, Mr. Mulder was born in Paterson, NJ, in 1922 into a musical family; he gave his life to music and his loving family. He shared his gift of music with others, including his students at Trenton High School, his choral groups, his friends, and the community through his many concerts over the past several decades. In 1942, he left Trenton State College (now the College of New Jersey) to enlist in the United States Coast Guard at age 20, and became the chief musician for the Coast Guard Band for the Manhattan Beach, NY, Coast Guard Installation. He directed the 65-member band, and a chorus of 300 voices, performing in concerts, parades and bond rallies, at Arlington National Cemetery and in New York City, and on the radio, to raise money during World War II. Mr. Mulder performed frequently with numerous top musical luminaries of the day, including Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald, Kate Smith, and others. Following the war, he returned to Trenton State College to complete his bachelor of arts degree. Later, he earned a aster of arts. Although he had many offers to perform professionally, Mr. Mulder knew that his mission on this earth was to create more musicians and singers, and to provide hope and happiness through song. In 1947, he commenced a 39-year career teaching music at Trenton Central High School ("TCHS"); one of his proudest moments was bringing the TCHS Choir to Italy to perform at the Vatican on Easter Sunday in 1971. In 1950, he formed the first of many choral groups, collaborating with the Trenton Junior Chamber of Commerce to form the Trenton Community Chorus. It became the Mercer County Chorus, more than 100 voices strong, many of whom were his students, and was a mainstay of choral music in the area over the more than 30-year period of his directorship. Anyone and everyone was invited to join. If you could carry a tune singing "My Country, 'Tis of Thee," that was all he needed to know. In 1955, he directed the 22nd Annual New Jersey All State Chorus, performing in Atlantic City. Throughout his early years, he organized many choral groups and projects, including the TCHS Male Glee Club, various trios and quartets, including the Off Keys Quartet and the Royal-Ayres Quartet, and a number of small special groups. Another early project was his Voices of Harry Mulder, a 16-member group that performed everything from barbershop harmonies to sacred music on radio and television. All the while, he also gave private voice and piano lessons. Over the years, Mr. Mulder also directed church choirs at the Second Presbyterian Church in Trenton, the First Presbyterian Church in Cranbury, the First Presbyterian Church in Trenton, and the First Presbyterian Church in Morrisville, PA. They were all volunteer choirs. After retiring from Trenton High School and his choral groups, Mr. Mulder continued to share his gift of music by providing private piano and voice lessons, playing the piano, and composing music, all of which he did enthusiastically until recent weeks. He left a library of more than 150 original works for piano, voice and flute, many of which he dedicated to his family, students and friends. Harry created a signature sound and a quality of performance that rivaled professional groups. At a tribute concert performed in his honor in the 1990s, it was said: "You taught us that excellence can be established and maintained under the most trying of circumstances. You gave the very best of yourself to bring out the best in us. You used music as an equalizer to transcend the barriers of intellect, gender, age, race and musical preference; the greatest tribute we can pay is to sing well in your presence." His music room is filled with plaques, awards and mementos marking his contributions to the community, the choruses he directed, and the churches he served, including an NAACP award honoring him for the cultural enrichment of the youth of the Delaware Valley. Harry "Bud" Mulder is survived by his devoted wife, Martha; three sons, Richard A. Mulder of Long Beach Island and friend, Carol; David F. Mulder and wife, Christine, of Newtown, PA, and Michael J. Mulder and wife, Michelle, of Princeton, NJ; his three grandchildren, Johanna F., John R. and Connor M. Mulder, all of Newtown, PA, and his brother, Stanley B. Mulder and wife Margie, of Winter Haven, FL, all of whom will carry his warmth and love and joyous spirit with them always. A private family graveside service was held on Friday, Dec. 16, 2011, at the Pennington Presbyterian Church cemetery. A public memorial service in celebration of his life will be held at the Pennington Presbyterian Church, 13 S. Main Street, Pennington NJ 08534, on Dec. 29, 2011, at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in the name of Harry A. Mulder may be made to the Deborah Heart and Lung Center, 200 Trenton Road, Browns Mills, NJ 08015, www.deborah.org

Mr. Mulder was a great inspiration to me when I sang in the THS chorus (1956-1959) and a community chorus he invited me to join. I later studied to be a solo singer and have performed and taught voice until now. He told us high school students that whatever else was going on in our lives when we grew up, we would always have music to give us meaning and joy, and that has definitely been true for me. He was a wonderful person and teacher.

Thank you Mr. Mulder for the gift of vocal music (TCHS Class of 1959). The high school choir, special group, community chorus, First Pres. Senior choir (and junior choir with Mrs. Mulder) were a great foundation for singing throughout my life. Where ever we moved, I always had a choir or singing group to enjoy. My deepest sympathy to Mrs. Mulder and the Mulder family.

There aren't enough words nor the manner in which to speak them to convey how much this man, Harry "Bud" Mulder meant to my life. I was on an entirely different track in school when I came upon him through my parents and church and his influence completely changed my life. He demanded much from all of his students and birthed a product of excellence in their lives. May God truly bless this man, his wonderful wife "Dusty" and all the younger Mulders that still carry his message.

The obituary from the Times was forwarded to me in CT. I am proud to say that I was lucky to be a student at TCHS in 1947 and was a "charter member" of many of the choirs, male chorus, and quartettes directed by "BUD". We became friends and colleagues. I sang in several of his church choirs. Lessons learned from his leadership and direction have stayed with me all these years. Kathy and I send our condolences to Dusty and the family.

I started taking piano lessons from Harry some years ago. I had always wanted to play the piano, and thought I needed just a few lessons to get me going in the right direction. Five years later, I was still taking lessons with Harry, because he taught so much more than just how to play the notes. Harry taught you to feel and understand the music you were playing. He insisted, from the beginning, that you not just play a piece, but rather that you try to say something with music. That something could be what the composer intended, or it could be what the player intended, but it had to be something more than just notes (one of his favorite sayings was "look, you can play this Mozart piece as you like; after all, he's not going to object").

The room in which he taught was filled to the rafters with the music he had composed specifically for his students (many of his works are named for his students), each work carefully designed to convey a technical and a musical point. His knowledge of music was encyclopedic, and his love of music was profound and infectious. I was privileged to have him play for me some recordings of his choral groups and, most wonderfully, a recording of himself playing the trumpet (truly awesome!).

But as much as Harry loved and revered and cherished music, I think he loved and cared about people even more, and that is why I kept coming back. He was that rarest of teachers, someone who did not want his students to learn any specific set of pre-established skills, but rather who wanted his students to accomplish all that they could, and above all, to derive joy from the making of music.

He was a gentleman and a gentle man, a kind and considerate man, a superbly gifted musician, and the finest teacher I have ever known. The last thing he said to me as I left his house after our last lesson was, "keep practicing." I can think of no better way to honor his memory. Harry, I'll keep practicing.

I am proud of the life my Uncle Bud (Harry A. Mulder) lived. He was an accomplished musician and taught many students privately and in schools and churches. He was a great father and husband. And to me he was a great uncle. He was an honorable person always. He grew tomatoes in his back yard and he and my Dad sent the same birthday card back and forth between New Jersey to Florida for... about 20 years I think. It is gratifying to see that so many people were affected positively though his musical talents. He was a good older brother and mentor to my Dad too growing up.

My sympathies and prayers to the Mulder Family...Thank you of sharing such a wonderful person with so many of us. I had the great opportunity to study with him from 1975-1978. Mr. Mulder welcomed three Villa Victoria Academy high schoolers into The Mercer County Chorus in the mid-1970s, and treated us (and challenged us!) as if we were adults. I, one of those lucky three, learned from Mr. Mulder the professionalism and passion of choral singing, and have sung in one choir or another ever since. I am one of many who am grateful for his guidance and kindness. Deepest condolences to his family. A real Trenton visionary.

What a great teacher and friend he was to all of us. I sang in the Sophomore Chorus, Senior Choir, Special Group and several smaller groups at school and also Mercer County Chorus. I thought of him often after graduation in 1961 and love remembering the times we spent with him.

My deepest condolences on the passing of Mr. Mulder. I had the privilege of singing in the THS chorus with Mr. Mulder and was one of the very fortunate students to go to Italy in 1971 to sing at the Vatican on Easter Sunday -- what a thrill that trip was! I also sang with Mr. Mulder as a member of the Mercer County Chorus and was a member of its gospel choir. He is remembered as a delightful and talented man -- I liked him very much. I hope you will celebrate all the goodness he has brought to this world! Best regards, Diane Silverstein

Oh how many lives he more than influence I cannot count.Just reading this now I thin of 1 friend who wrote an entire musical production ,ananother who lives in S.Afica who's life includes singing and directing a musical performance dedicated to ending the Aids epidemic there. And then there is my close friend in NYC who's entire life is spreading knowledge of theatre and music. This is only to name a few.
