Harvey Lee Gates RURAL RETREAT, Va. Harvey Lee Gates, age 66, passed away on May 16, 2013, at his home in Rural Retreat. He was born in the Chatham Hill section of Smyth County, Va., to the late Charlie and Georgia Call Gates. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Richard Stanley Gates. He had served his country in the United States Army, being a veteran of the Vietnam War. He had served as the pastor of the Independent Holiness Church in Speedwell, Va. He loved for his family to be together and enjoyed helping others. He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Jackie Gates; two sons, Jermey Gates and wife, Lisa, and Daniel Gates and wife, Rebecca; three brothers, Harlow Gates and wife, Shirley, Bill Gates and wife, Anita, and Cecil Gates and wife, Elaine; one sister, Goldie Harris and husband, Roy; one grandchild (and one on the way), Ethan Gates; and a special friend, Ricky Parks. A graveside funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Sunday, May 19, 2013, at the Sunset Cemetery in Ceres, Va., with Pastor Bill Wagner officiating. Family and friends are asked to meet at the Bradley's Funeral Home in Marion for a procession to the cemetery. Full military honors will be rendered. A reception will be held at the Gates' residence in Rural Retreat following the service. Flowers will be appreciated or contributions can be made to a local charity of your choice.
