Harvey Miller Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 2, 2024.
We celebrate the life of Harvey Miller who passed at the age 102, on November 27, 2024, in Willits, Mendocino County, California. An electrical engineering alumnus of the University of Michigan, Harvey was a long-term resident of Palo Alto, CA. Harvey was a highly respected and accomplished semiconductor and printed circuit board industry engineering consultant and entrepreneur in Silicon Valley from the 1960s until near his passing, where he ran a successful database and engineering consultancy firm for many years.

Harvey was born in Baltimore on November 23, 1922, and was raised in Canton (OH). His close life-long friend, Paul Lolich, then of Akron OH, introduced his sister Jovanka (Jenny) Lolich, who was Harvey's life-long love, who Harvey would remain married with for over 50 years until her death.

Harvey was a World War II veteran, having served in the Army in Japan for three years from 1943-1946.

Harvey was delighted by family, spending many hours with his children, and treasuring his time with his grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Harvey is predeceased by his loving wife, Jovanka (Jenny) Miller (2007), and by grandson Peter Rydzik (2000). Harvey is survived by his sister Bambi Curtis of Bend OR, his daughter Suzanne Rydzik of Manteca CA, sons David Miller of Hawley PA and Dan Miller of Willits CA, his daughter-in-law Jane Miller of Willits CA, his nieces and nephews Mirjana Bartl Siampos, Ksenija Bartl, Arsen Bartl, Danilo Bartl, Lisa Weining, and Martin Lolich – all of Chicago, Margo York of Indianapolis, Lori Curtis of Minneapolis, and Jim Curtis of Los Angeles. In addition, he is survived by four grandchildren Mark Rydzik, Matthew Rydzik, Sage Miller-Martin, and Seren Miller of California, by five great-grandchildren, and by 16 grand nephews and nieces.

In addition to family and technology, Harvey was passionate about science and longevity research, reading many research articles, books, as well as participating in numerous health research studies. He was a long-term blood donor to the Stanford University Blood Bank, donating well over 100 units, and ultimately willing his body and brain to medical research at Stanford University School of Medicine.

Harvey, a near life-long agnostic, near his death quipped that "whoever created humans had to have had a profound sense of humor". He went on, saying that "God did not do a such a great job". He continued that "the problem with God was that he was a he, that man-and-womankind would have been better off if God had been a woman"!

The first time I met Harvey was at a technology trade show in San Francisco around 2000 or so. He and my mother, Loretta Edwards, were cousins and we had somehow introduced to one another. He was there learning about networking and/or security which were what I built my career around. I was not sure if he was there to satisfy his curiosity or if he was hustling consulting business but he was sharp as a tack and genuinely jovial. We stayed in touch over social media til shortly after Mom died in 2021. He preferred LinkedIn. I am sorry I did not get to know him better. My condolences and wishes to all his friends and family. May his memory be a blessing.

Harvey was a dear friend and colleague of more than 40 years. We met when I was on the staff of the IPC in 1981. He was a personal hero, a treasured industry maven with a brilliant mind and amazing memory. Nothing seemed to escape his interest and he shared many if his findings with me. When he was living in Palo Alto would occasionally to meet at a park near his home and have a beer while discussing a wide range of topics, technical, medical, health and longevity related as well as political ;-) . He will be greatly missed.

What a wonderful life you had Harvey! A brilliant mind and a will to match. I wish I could have spent more time knowing you. However, the little time was enough for me to feel your kindness and love for your family. You will be truly missed by all of us.
