Harvey Schlieman Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 18, 2011.
Harvey Lee Schlieman was born in Great Falls, Montana on April 25, 1930. He was the third child of Imo A. Wilkinson and William Schlieman. His early years were spent in Sunburst, Montana, where his father was employed at the local oil refinery.

He attended Missoula County High School in Missoula, followed by a Bachelor of Science and a Juris Doctorate from the University of Montana. After his studies, an Air Force ROTC commission led him to be stationed in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, where his parents were employees of the Saudi Aramco oil company.

Upon discharge from the Air Force, he attended the University of Cairo to pursue Islamic Studies and Islamic Law, and subsequently continued his studies at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) in London, England.

He married Judy Kaulbach of Canada while in London, and they had three children. They lived in Beirut, Lebanon and then Tripoli, Libya where he was employed by Oasis Oil and then Occidental Petroleum Corporation. Following the 1969 Libyan revolution, Occidental transferred Harvey to Paris and then to London.

Following his divorce from Judy, Harvey married Brigitte Krehmcke of Germany in 1973. They spent time in London together before moving to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia in 1976 where Harvey practiced law with a Saudi lawyer. Harvey and Brigitte had three boys before returning to the US in 1991, settling in Golden, Colorado.

Harvey battled dementia for the past two years and recently fell fracturing his hip. Complications resulting from this injury ultimately led to his death on May 16th. Three of his sons were with him at his bedside. Harvey was a faithful Christian and was ready to be with the Lord.

He was preceded in death by his younger sister, Judy, in 1974, and by his parents. He is survived by his older brothers Howard of Spokane, Washington and David of Sonoma, California; his first wife Judy and their three children Sandy, Glenn and Andrea, and his second wife Brigitte and their three children Stephen, Jürgen and Matthias.

Harvey was a loving father, beloved friend, and gifted musician. We will miss him greatly.

A funeral service followed by a reception is planned for 10 a.m. on Monday, May 23rd at Calvary Church in Golden, Colorado.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Harvey's name to Boys Town (www.boystown.org), one of his favorite charities. Boys Town, founded by Father Edward Flanagan more than 90 years ago, provides compassionate and research-proven treatment for children and their families to address behavioral, emotional or physical problems.
