Harvey John Vander Baan, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle, went to be with his Lord and Savior on March 13, 2025. Harvey passed away peacefully surrounded by his children and was reunited with his loving wife of 53 years.
Harvey was born on April 14, 1950, in
Whitinsville, Massachusetts. The youngest son of John and Agnes Vander Baan, Harvey shared his childhood home with his older brother, Roland. After graduating from Northbridge High School, Harvey went on to attend Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan, which is where he met his beautiful wife, Carol. The two were married in August of 1971 and Harvey graduated with a degree in business the following year.
Following his graduation, Harvey began his career working for a national lumber distributor in Southern California. A natural salesman, Harvey was quickly promoted to national sales manager, a role that took him back to the east coast for a few years. A subsequent promotion led Harvey and his family back to California where they ultimately settled in San Jose. When he was offered another promotion that would necessitate a subsequent move to Texas, Harvey declined, and the family decided to plant their roots in Northern California.
In March of 1985 Harvey accepted a job as sales manager for small office furniture dealership. He would remain in Northern California for the next 32 years working alongside his friend and business partner. The two led the company through multiple transitions and ultimately became the largest Herman Miller dealership in the United States. Throughout his 30+ year career as a business leader, Harvey impacted the lives of numerous employees, colleagues and clients. He led by example and always let his faith in God dictate his decisions as well as his interactions with others.
Despite his many responsibilities as a business leader, Harvey always made sure his family and his faith were his top priorities. He served as an elder in church for many years, routinely gave of his time and resources to others, and rarely missed a swim meet or football game when his boys were playing. Harvey was larger than life in so many ways. Passionate, generous, and most of all, steadfast in his love for the Lord. Harvey will be remembered as a man who cared deeply for others and always put his family before himself. He will be deeply missed by so many.
Harvey is survived by his sons, Michael Vander Baan (Leslie) and Daniel Vander Baan (Rebecca), and his cherished grandchildren, Isla, John, Cole, and Kendall.
Harvey was instrumental in growing the Longview Men's Bible Study along with the fund which supports the several faith-based organizations. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the following organizations.
