Hazel Franklin Obituary

Published by Richmond Times-Dispatch from May 31 to Jun. 4, 2012.
FRANKLIN, Hazel C., departed this life on May 30, 2012, at St. Mary's Hospital, Richmond, Va. She was born on June 17, 1932 to Harold Christian and the former Sarah Morton of New Kent County, Va. During her formative years she gave her life to Christ and joined her 'family' church, Second Liberty Baptist in Quinton, Va. After graduating high school, she ventured to Richmond, where she attended Virginia Union University. It was there that she met and married her 'soulmate' and the man that would become her husband for the next fifty years. This union was blessed with two children, Eric Wayne and Lisa Andrea (deceased). The children attended the First African Day Care Center which served as the inspiration to establish roots in this local assembly. Hazel served on the Usher Board until her health began to decline. Hazel worked for 23 years as a computer technician at the Virginia Department of Transportation. She enjoyed her job and often spoke of her co-workers as true and lasting friends. Hazel had not considered retirement until her husband (also a state employee) decided to retire and made an appointment for the both of them with the state personnel officer in 1995. After considering the pros and cons, she decided to retire with her husband. Retirement afforded Hazel the opportunity to relax, travel and visit friends and family near and far. She is survived by her devoted husband, McDonald Franklin of Richmond, Va.; her son, Eric Franklin and daughter-in-law, Rane of Owings, MD; stepson, Larry Dugger of Deer Park, N.Y.; sister, Althea Holmes of Newport News, Va.; as well as a host of other relatives and friends. Remains rest at Scott's Funeral Home, 115 E. Brookland Park Blvd. The family will receive friends Wednesday, June 6 from 11 to 11:45 a.m. at First African Baptist Church, 2700 Hanes Avenue, followed by funeral services at 12 noon. Dr. Rodney Waller officiating, Rev. Milton Hathaway eulogist. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 4600 Cox Road, Glen Allen, Va. 23060. Online guest book at www.scottsfuneralhome.com.

ERIC; I AM SO SORRY TO HEAR OF THE LOSS OF YOUR MOTHER; HE WAS A VERY UNIQUE AND SPECIAL INDIVIDUAL. I HAD THE PLEASURE OF MEETING AND SPEAKING WITH HER SEVERAL TIMES. YOUR PARENTS ALWAYS WELCOMED ME INTO THEIR HOME. HER SMILE AND LAUGHTER ARE UNFORGETABLE. I HAD HEARD SO MANY WONDERFUL THINGS ABOUT HER FROM SO MANY DIFFERENT INDIVIDUALS, WHICH SPEAKS OF HER ABILITY TO TOUCH SO MANY LIVES. SHE WAS A GIFT FROM GOD; AND I CONSIDER IT TO BE A BLESSING JUST TO HAVE KNOWN HER. HER SPIRIT LIVES ON IN HER FAMILY AND THOSE WHO LOVED HER. I AM A FIRM BELIEVER THAT WE WILL SEE ALL OUR LOVED ONES AGAIN.

Although we have lost an amazing and beautiful part of our family, I am confident that where Aunt Hazel now resides is far more precious than what we could ever offer her here. I will forever cherish the wonderful memories she shared with us and I will remember the immense impact she has made on our lives. Our family would not have been the same without her. Uncle Jr (Mac) and Eric, thank you for sharing your angel with us.

Aunt Hazel, I LOVE YOU DEARLY!
